Performance is assessed by periodically transmitting echo test signals along the IP network using internet control message protocol (ICMP). If the time interval between sending and receiving an echo test signal exceeds a predetermined allowed time interval then the quality of real time communication cannot be assured and performance is deemed unsatisfactory. In this event either the IP network or the receiving side node must be behaving abnormally. An ICMP echo signal can be transmitted along the public network to determine if it is the IP network or the receiving side node which is behaving abnormally.

A system and method for providing a voice communication service between a first user and a second user after the first user and the second user are communicating via a non-voice communication service is described. The non-voice communication service may be processed through a server in communication with the first and second users. The non- voice communication service is monitored for a voice service request, and upon receipt of the voice service request, establishment of a voice communication service is initiated between the first and second users through the server. The first and second users may be anonymous to each other over the non-voice communication service and the voice communication service.

DATA NETWORK ACCESS

There is described a method of providing a connection service between a user's terminal (1) connected to a telephone network (2) and the public Internet (6) through a point-of-presence (3). In this method, the user's computer dials a connection service access telephone number and a connection is created between the user's terminal (1) and the point-of-presence (3). The point-of-presence (3) then checks that the dialled connection service access telephone number is one of one or more valid connection service access telephone numbers. If the dialled connection service access number is valid then the point-of-presence (3) transmits an allocated Internet network address to the user's terminal (1). The point-of-presence (3) then provides a connection between the user's terminal (1) and the public Internet (6) for messages containing the allocated network address.

Receive paths are adapted to convert PDUs of respective transport protocols into a base format, and transmit paths are adapted to convert a stream of base format data into PDUs of respective transport protocols.
