In one preferred embodiment of the invention, all elements of the scanner are part of a single-enclosure that has a primary connection to the Internet or to a local intranet. In this embodiment, the preferred sample type is a microscope slide and the illumination and imaging optics are consistent with transmission mode optics optimized for diffraction-limited digital imaging.

A modulator logic circuit operates to call up the data from the data delivery circuit, form a modulation drive signal based on the power information, and delay the modulation drive signal based the position data. The modulator logic circuit thus operates to vary the modulation drive signal to begin or end exposure along the scan lines with greater resolution or pixel density by at least a factor of four more than the resolution or spacing density between adjacent scan lines. The scan lines are arranged within stripes, and adjacent stripes preferably are made to overlap such that the stripes are blended in the overlap according to a predetermined stepwise changing function.

A pattern shifter for shifting the spatial modulation pattern across the length of the long axis at a constant rate is provided as is a pattern rotator for rotating the spatial modulation pattern at a rate equal to the rate of shifting of the spatial modulation pattern. A scanner for scanning the beam of light onto and across the circumference of the inner cylindrical wall portion and a driver for advancing the scanner mechanism, after scanning a row, to an adjacent row to repeat the scanning are both provided. The relative phase angle between rotation of the spatial modulation pattern and scanning of the pattern is maintained such that the direction of movement of the projected image of said shifting is parallel to the scan motion, but opposite in direction. An optical system is provided to project the modulated beam of light and focus it to produce an image of the shifting modulation pattern at the recording medium so that the rate of shifting motion cancels the scan motion.

Apparatus for and method of fully automatic rapid scanning and digitizing of an entire microscope sample, or a substantially large portion of a microscope sample, using a linear array detector synchronized with a positioning stage that is part of a computer controlled microscope slide scanner. The invention provides a method for composing the image strips obtained from successive scans of the sample into a single contiguous digital image. The invention also provides a method for statically displaying sub-regions of this large digital image at different magnifications, together with a reduced magnification macro-image of the entire sample. The invention further provides a method for dynamically displaying, with or without operator interaction, portions of the contiguous digital image. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, all elements of the scanner are part of a single-enclosure that has a primary connection to the Internet or to a local intranet. In this embodiment, the preferred sample type is a microscope slide and the illumination and imaging optics are consistent with transmission mode optics optimized for diffraction-limited digital imaging.

A method and apparatus for transverse registration of image exposures on photoreceptive belts subject to lateral deviation from linear travel in which targets, corresponding in location to the image areas to be exposed, are used for the detection of lateral belt displacement and to control the transverse location of exposure scan. The targets are of a pattern defining a reference line and a line inclined with respect to the direction of belt travel so that the duration of time between passage of the target lines with respect to a spacially fixed sensing axis will vary with lateral displacement of the belt. The targets may assume a variety of specific patterns and the invention is applicable to single and multi-pass image exposure systems as well as to both modulated laser and light emitting diode types of exposure devices.
