Power savings in Access Points (APs). Legacy 802.11 modes such as 802.11a, b, g use one transmitter/receive chain per radio. High Throughput (HT) 802.11n modes use multiple (2, 3, or more) transmit/receive chains per radio. Power consumed by the AP may be reduced by powering off unused transmit and/or receive chains. Multiple transmit chains are only powered up when HT 802.11n transmissions requiring them are made. Using protected mode signaling, the AP powers up multiple receive chains needed for HT 802.11n reception on receiving an RTS packet indicating that an 802.11n client wishes to send 802.11n HT data. Transmit and/or receive chains may be powered up with minimum on times. Only certain elements of a chain may be powered up and down, with those elements requiring a great deal of settling time left powered on. Transmit chains may be powered p on the reception of an RTS frame indicating arrival of HT 802.11 data.

The present disclosure relates to envelope power supply calibration of a multi-mode RF power amplifier (PA) to ensure adequate headroom when operating using one of multiple communications modes. The communications modes may include multiple modulation modes, a half-duplex mode, a full-duplex mode, or any combination thereof. As such, each communications mode may have specific peak-to-average power and linearity requirements for the multi-mode RF PA. As a result, each communications mode may have corresponding envelope power supply headroom requirements. The calibration may include determining a saturation operating constraint based on calibration data obtained during saturated operation of the multi-mode RF PA. During operation of the multi-mode RF PA, the envelope power supply may be restricted to provide a minimum allowable magnitude based on an RF signal level of the multi-mode RF PA, the communications mode, and the saturation operating constraint to provide adequate headroom.

Some embodiments of the present disclosure relate to transmission techniques that result in power savings relative to previous solutions. These techniques often transmit a signal-of-interest by using two paths, namely, a transmission path (which includes a power amplifier) and a control path. The signal-of-interest is evaluated in “fast-track” fashion on the control path, such that the control path can “tune” a DC supply signal provided to the power amplifier. Thus, when a delayed version of the signal-of-interest is provided over the transmission path to the power amplifier, the DC supply signal provided to the power amplifier helps ensure that the power amplifier has “just enough” DC supply to ensure reliable operation without dissipating excess power. In this way, the techniques disclosed herein help to reduce power consumption in transmitters, thereby potentially helping to extend battery life and reduce undesired heating for users.

In a mobile communication system, a base station apparatus stores setting change information which includes setup information that is changed in accordance with a prescribed event when the prescribed event occurs, timing information that specifies a timing for making a setting change, and trigger information that specifies an action based on which the base station apparatus and a mobile station apparatus compute the setting change timing for the base station apparatus and the mobile station apparatus, respectively; and transmits, in advance of occurrence of the prescribed event, the setting change information to the mobile station apparatus. When the action specified in the trigger information occurs, the mobile station apparatus and the base station apparatus each determine the setting change timing in accordance with the timing information and effect the setting change at the determined timing in accordance with the setup information.

Accordingly, neighboring nodes determine whether or not a channel of the PDU slot or ACK slot is sensed by using the pilot subcarriers of the PDU slot or ACK slot.

Techniques for determining timing information for cells are disclosed. A user equipment (UE) may communicate with a serving cell and may need to make measurements of other cells, e.g., to support positioning of the UE. Each cell may transmit reference signals based on its timing. Different cells may operate asynchronously or with unknown timing. The UE may send a request for measurement gaps to the serving cell and may include timing information in the request. The timing information may (directly or indirectly) convey relative timing between the serving cell and a reference cell. The serving cell may determine measurement gaps at the proper time for other cells based on the timing information from the UE and may avoid scheduling the UE for data transmission during the measurement gaps. The UE may make measurements of other cells during the measurement gaps, without losing any data from the serving cell.
