Sulphuro-anhydride derivatives of tertiary bases; sulphonic acids. - Sulphuro-anhydride derivatives of tertiary organic bases, e.g. pyridine or dimethylaniline, are obtained by causing the base to react with sulphur trioxide, or with a substance capable of forming a sulphuro-anhydride derivative with the base, in the form of vapours, gases, mists or sprays, with or without the presence of inert gases. If sulphur trioxide is used, the base and sulphur trioxide are employed in substantially equi-molecular quantities, but if chlorsulphonic acid or an alkyl ester is employed, approximately two molecular proportions of the base are employed to one of the acid or ester, the product being a mixture of the sulphuro-anhydride and hydrochloride or alkyl chloride of the base. The product is obtained in the form of a fine powder or snow. The process may be carried out by distilling the base at a uniform rate and leading the vapour into the reaction chamber, by passing a current of dry air or other inert gas through the heated base, or a mist or spray of the base may be used. The sulphur trioxide may be obtained by heating the calculated quantity of oleum and leading the vapour into the reaction chamber, or by vaporizing or atomizing the chlorsulphonic acid or ester. The process may also be carried out in conjunction with processes for the preparation of sulphur trioxide bv the contact method, the sulphur trioxide with the inert diluent gases associated with it being led direct from the contact mass to the reaction chamber. To prevent condensation of the materials on their way to the reaction chamber an arrangement with three concentric tubes may be employed, the inner tube being steamheated, while the sulphur trioxide vapour and base are passed through the middle and outer tubes. In an example, rapid currents of dry air are passed through separate heated vessels containing pyridine and oleum and thence to a reaction chamber rotating in a trough of cold water. The reaction chamber is connected with a larger stationary vessel, on the walls and floor of which the pyridine sulphuro-anhydride collects in the form of a snow-like powder. The products are suitable for use in the preparation of esters of vat dyes and for sulphonation of various hydrocarbons.
