Partial hydrogenation of unsaturated glyceride oils in solvents
Реферат: One part of an unsaturated glyceride oil having polyethylenic fatty radicles is mixed with 0.05 to 15 parts by weight of an inert volatile fat solvent and finely-divided hydrogenation catalyst, the mixture is agitated vigorously and hydrogen passed through, the temperature of the mixture being between 60 DEG and 125 DEG C., and the partial pressure of the hydrogen being at least 20 and not over 200 pounds per square inch gauge, until a major portion of the polyethylenic acid radicles have become more saturated, and then separating the hydrogenated oil from the solvent, catalyst and hydrogen. Oils specified are cottonseed, soybean, sesame, and peanut oils, and they are partially hydrogenated so that their iodine values are between 50 and 90. In examples: (1) cottonseed oil is mixed with ethyl alcohol and hydrogenated in the presence of nickel, the temperature of the charge being maintained at 90 DEG C. On reaction reaching the desired end point the solvent is distilled off; (2) soybean oil is mixed with 2-methoxyethanol, whereby two liquid phases of different amount of oil in the solvent are produced, the more unsaturated phase hydrogenating more rapidly, which is followed by a transfer from the more concentrated phase thereto; (4) 50-50 mixture of cottonseed and soybean oil is hydrogenated. The process may be batchwise or continuous. Solvents in order of preference are ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, cyclohexanol, acetone and ethyl ether. Mixtures of two or more solvents can be used, as also can a selective solvent, e.g. furfural and liquid propane near its critical temperature. The catalyst employed is of nickel promoted by copper, chromium, cobalt, zirconium, thorium or their oxides. Specifications 658,188 and 658,189 are referred to.
