[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 17, 1936.] [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A device for producing curved surfaces by means of a grinding, turning, planing, or other tool, operates on the principle that in a circle the angle at the circumference on a given chord is constant, the tool for producing the curve being carried at the apex of the angle, whilst the sides of the angle move over fixed bearing points. In Fig. 1, the tool 7 is carried at the apex of the angle formed by sides 5, 6, the angle between which may be adjustable, and which respectively move over a roller 3 and a toothed wheel 4 engaging a rack on the side 5 The work 8 may be reciprocated beneath the tool, which is moved step by step for each reciprocation, or the tool may be oscillated on the supports 3, 4, the work being fed longitudinally step by step. In order to produce curves other than of circular form, the tool 7 may be moved in or out by means 9, Fig. 2, as the device oscillates. Surfaces of revolution also may be formed, for example, spherical or barrel shaped surfaces, by rotating the work in contact with the tool, which is moved as above ; in place of two sides 5, 6, three sides 5, 5<1>, 6 may be used supported by a ring 12, Fig. 5. In order to produce more complicated forms of curve, the device shown in Fig. 7 may be used, consisting of two angle devices 5, 6 spaced apart by stays 13 and movable on supports 3, 4, the devices supporting a similar device 16 carrying the tool 7, and movable on supports 14, 15 adjustably carried by the devices 5, 6 ; the supports 14, 15 may be adjustable on arc-shaped guides carried by the devices- 5, 6. In a further modification, the devices 5, 6 carrying the device 16 are movable in planes inclined to each other, telescopic stays being employed to connect the devices 5, 6. In all of the above forms of the device, the work instead of the tool, may be carried by the parts 5, 6; the angle between the parts 5, 6, or the distance apart of the supports 3, 4 may be varied in predetermined manner to produce desired curves.
