Реферат: A continuous strip of crystalline oriented thermoplastic film is shaped, the shaped strip is heated to set it at a temperature below its melting point but at which internal stresses are relieved and, while being retained in the desired shape, it is then cooled to a temperature at which it has substantially no tendency to lose the shape imparted to it. Oriented and previously heat-set polyethylene terephthalate film may be heat-set at from 150 DEG -230 DEG C., and oriented and previously heat-set polypropylene film may be heat-set at 100 DEG -170 DEG C. Other specified film materials include nylon, polycarbonate and poly-3:3-bis-chloromethoxyoxacyclobutane. Apparatus, as <PICT:0887687/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0887687/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0887687/IV (a)/3> shown, suitable for making a film of the cross-section of Fig. 3, consists of a shaping die 2 (for details see Fig. 4) through which the strip of film 1 is led, followed by an electrically heated setting die 3 and a cooling die 4. In a modification, the shaping and setting dies are integral and the latter is joined to the cooling die through a suitable heat insulator. Specification 840,819 is referred to.
