[Class 15 (ii)] Textile materials containing wool or other animal fibres capable of felting or shrinking are treated to reduce shrinkage with aqueous solutions of hydrogen peroxide or other peroxides or persalts capable of evolving oxygen, while maintaining the pH of the solution at from 8 to 12. Perborates, percarbonates, and the compound of hydrogen peroxide with urea are referred to as other examples of per salts. The alkaline substance to be added may be sodium or other alkaline hydroxide, silicate, borate, phosphate, or carbonate ; ammonia or organic bases such as triethanolamine, triethylamine and quaternary ammonium hydroxides. The temperature conditions are chosen according to the nature of the alkaline substance and the length of time to be devoted to the treatment. If the alkaline substance has appreciable stabilizing effect on hydrogen peroxide, e.g. sodium silicate, temperatures of 85 to 95‹C. may be used and the time of reaction is short, e.g. from 30 secs. to 5 minutes. If on the other hand caustic soda or other alkali having little stabilizing effect is used, a longer and repeated treatment at a lower temperature is necessary, e.g. for 8 minutes at 60‹C. repeated six times. Alternatively the fabric may be soaked with the alkaline peroxide in the cold and then heated by steam. According to one example, a fabric of 50 per cent. wool and 50 per cent. cotton is treated for 30 seconds at 85‹C. with a " two volumes " solution of hydrogen peroxide adjusted to pH 12 with sodium silicate. The fabric is then washed in water and dried. The treatment may be applied to cloth in the form of a roll, or it may be applied to the slubbing, roving, yarn or thread from which the fabric is made. The treatment can be applied before or after dyeing and serves to improve the levelness of the dyeing as well as imparting anti-shrink properties. The affinity of acid dyestuffs is increased when the concentration of peroxide is low or the concentration of alkali high. When reducing agents such as sodium bisulphite have been used in previous treatment of the wool, more drastic oxidation conditions may be applied.
