Class 38(5) [Also in Group XI] In a device for closing the circuit to a heater 2 for a predetermined time a mercury switch 17 is retained in a horizontal position by a pivoted lever 21 having a portion 23 engageable by a member 51 projecting radially from a collar 50 adjustably secured at one end of a shaft. 48. A gear 44 is secured to one half 43 of a dog clutch, and is rotatable on the shaft, the other half 42 of the clutch being longitudinally slidable but non-rotatable on the shaft and provided with a collar portion 41 having an annular groove 40 engaged by pins 39 of a lever 32 pivoted at its upper end 31. The other end of the lever is urged by tension spring 33 such that the dog faces of the clutch are normally disengaged, engagement being caused only when an electromagnet 28 is energized. Towards the other end of the shaft 48 is secured a collar 62 having a radial member 63, the latter 'being engageable by a rod 64 provided on a gear 55 rotatable on the shaft 48 by means of a knob 60 and chain drive 56; the shaft 48 also carries a pointer 66 and a spiral spring 52. In operation current passes via contacts 14, 15 and mercury switch 17 to the electromagnet 28 and motor 27, the clutch thus being engaged, the gear 44 rotated, and the circuit through the resistance 2 completed through contacts 35, 36. The gear 44 and the shaft 48 are rotated until the mercury switch 17 tilts on being released by the lever 21 when the latter is struck by the radial member 51, current supply to the electromagnet 28 and the motor 27 thus being broken. The lever 32 now returns to its original position, contacts 35, 36 are disconnected to de-energize the resistance 2, the clutch is disengaged, and the shaft is returned by the spring 52 to its original position as determined by the setting of the gear 55 by means of the knob 60; the duration of the heating of resistance 2 may thus be varied by such setting and is indicated by the pointer 66.
