Apparatus to be connected to an underwater wellhead 39 comprises a housing 45, a chamber 46 in the housing, a piston 47 in the chamber, batches 49 mounted on the housing and movable by the piston to engage the wellhead, conduits 43, 44 connected to pumps 57, 58 to supply fluid to the chamber to move the pistons, and a central valve 73 moved by an actuator 77 so that fluid from the pump 57 moves the piston downwardly to engage the latches and fluid from the pump 58 moves the piston upwardly to free the latches. A reversible electric motor 55 controlled from a switch box 38 drives the pumps through clutches 59, 60, the arrangement being that rotation of the motor in one direction drives one pump and rotation in the other direction drives the other pump. The outlets of the pumps are connected to the controller, and to the valve, non return valves 75, 76 being included in the conduits. With the pump 57 operating the valve and controller are set as shown so that fluid flows through the conduit 43 to engage the latches, and with the pump 58 operating the controller sets the valve so that fluid flows through the conduit 44 to free the latches. In a modification the apparatus is adapted to fit, and the latches to engage the interior of a well head. The apparatus may attach a blow-out preventer to a well head, and further apparatus may connect a marine conductor to the preventer. Specifications 924,904 and 948,322 are referred to.
