Variable - speed gearing; clutches. - Relates to variable gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles, of the type in which clutches for coupling the gear-wheels to the shaft are operated by an internally-sliding rod. The gear elements, such as A, loose upon the hollow shaft D are formed with internal friction surfaces A' &c., adapted to be engaged by cam friction members F pivoted or otherwise suitably supported upon radial plungers F<1>. The plungers F<1> of the gear selected for driving are thrust out radially by a swell G<1> upon the internally-sliding rod G. The members F, which are normally held in a central position by springs H, are tilted on touching the surfaces A<2> &c. so as to become jammed and thereby transmit power.
