Axle-boxes and other axle bearings.-Two sets of conical rollers E run round races, each having one surface formed on a nut or collar D and the other on a casing B<1> screwed into the cylindrical casing B. The nut D is locked by internal nuts and a feathered washer D<2>, D<3>, D<4>, and also by a nut and feathered washer D<1>, D<8>, the screwed portion C<2> of the axle being of less diameter and having the screwthread thereon the opposite hand from the portion C<1> which carries the nut D. The wood of the hub is covered by a ring A<3> screwed into the casing B', and a cap F .provided with a lubricating-plug is screwed over the bearing and into the ring A<3>. The inner bearing is held in place by a ring G<7> of packing-material and a cap G, both of which may be split to facilitate their removal &c. To facilitate the insertion and removal of the rollers. they may be provided with end pins, which engage with channelled flanges E'. Or the rollers may be held in place by a loose cage carried by the nut D, the cage consisting of end rings connected by rods or bars passing between the rollers.
