Improvements relating to the Purification of Water and other Liquids.

Water, purifying ; liquids, purifying.- Relates to the purification of water, sewage, &c., of the kind in which the impurities are removed by coagulation and subsequent filtration or the like. Sulphurous oxide, or its equivalent, is combined with water, and the acid so formed passed over iron, or a suitable compound of iron or aluminium, producing a metallic salt which is introduced into the water to be purified and there precipitated as coagulant hydrate. A preferred form of apparatus is described. Sulphur is burnt in a retort 2 fitted with an adjustable door 5, bridge 4, and supply doors 9. The sulphurous oxide formed is carried by a steam jet into a chamber 11, where it meets water sprayed from a rose 13. The sulphurous acid is then passed up and down through iron scrap, and the ferrous bisulphite formed is passed through a float-controlled tank into the main water pipe.
