[Class 117.] Apparatus for separating asbestos fibre from the crushed rock containing it comprises an horizontal screen which is reciprocated up and down at an angle, the upward movement being suddenly stopped to throw the material against inclined surfaces. whereby the rock is deflected sideways and ultimately off the screen, whereas the asbestos is not deflected but merely progresses along the screen. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a screen A is mounted on swinging arms C which in the raised position are inclined at 45‹. The screen is depressed by a cam on a rotating shaft and is raised by springs D, the upward movement being arrested suddenly by stops. Above the screen are a series of pairs of inclined plates O. The material thrown upwards and forwards impinges against these plates, the rock thereby being deflected sideways while the asbestos progresses along the screen. Dust falls through the screen. In a modification Fig. 4, inclined plates O, P extend the whole length of the screen. The side plates P deflect the rock fragments towards the centre of the screen, and they are then thrown out by the centre plates O.
