Реферат: An N-(b -trichloro-a -alkoxyethyl) amide of an a , b -unsaturated carboxylic acid is polymerized by bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension polymerization with at least one other ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compound. The 'amide' compound has the general formula: <FORM:0948586/C3/1> where R is a hydrogen or halogen atom, an alkyl or a substituted alkyl radical and R1 is an alkyl, aralkyl or alkenyl radical which may be linear or branched and which may also contain hetero atoms of further substituents Lists of suitable radicals for R1 are given. Ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compounds mentioned are a -b -unsaturated carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids and their esters, amides, substituted amides and nitriles, such as acrylic methacrylic and maleic acids; methyl ethyl and butyl-acrylates; acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile; acrylamide and methacrylamide; vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate and propionate; unsaturated polymerizable aldehydes, ketones and alcohols and their esters and ethers such as acrolein, methyl vinyl ketone, allyl and methallyl alcohols, allylmethylether and allyl acetate; and polymerizable hydrocarbons containing a single unsaturation and diene hydrocarbons such as ethylene, propylene, butadiene or isoprene; vinyl ethers such as vinyl methyl or ethyl ether; vinyl or vinylidene halides such as vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride; and aromatic and heterocyclic N- or C-vinyl compounds such as styrene, alkyl-styrenes, dichlorostyrene, N-vinylpyrrolidone and N-vinylcarbazole. The polymers may be cross-linked by heating to temperatures of 160 to 190 DEG C., an acid being present if desired. They may also be cross-linked with compounds with react with the alkoxyethyl groups of the polymers e.g. condensation products of urea, melamine, phenol, or resorcinol with formaldehyde, and their reaction products with alcohols. Epoxy resins alkyd resins and poly-alcohols may also be used. In Example 1, N-(b -trichloro-a -methoxyethyl) methacrylamide is copolymerized with butyl acrylate using a butanol solution and dilauryl peroxide and dodecylmercaptan, while in Example 2 N-b -trichloro-a -methoxyethyl) methacrylamide is copolymerized with styrene and butyl acrylate in an emulsion there being present an alkali salt of a sulphonated oxyethylation product of a fatty alcohol mixture (C16-C18), potassium persulphate and sodium pyrophosphate in water.
