The presently disclosed devices and methods allow for preserving and restoring crispiness to snack food by placing a specific type of desiccant device in the original packaging of the food item and then closing up the package and securing the closure, even if not completely airtight. In some embodiments it may be desirable to position the desiccant away from direct contact with the food item. Prior to deployment, the individual desiccant device or pod can be activated by removing a moisture barrier strip or, alternatively, removing the device from an airtight individual package. One possible embodiment is to use magnetic material to enable the desiccant device to be held in place above the level of the product within a package by a magnetic material outside of the package. 1. A container (22) includes a shell (24) made from a polymer, for example PET, and incorporating a catalyst, for example a palladium catalyst. A closure (40) incorporates a plug which includes a source of hydrogen, for example a hydride. In use, with container (22) including a beverage and closure (40) in position, the headspace in the container will be saturated with water vapor. This vapor contacts the hydride associated with plug (42) and as a result the hydride produces molecular hydrogen which migrates into the polymer matrix of shell (24) and combines with oxygen which may have entered the container through its permeable walls. A reaction between the hydrogen and oxygen takes place, catalysed by the catalyst, and water is produced. Thus, oxygen which may ingress the container is scavenged and the contents of the container are protected from oxidation.

Disclosed is a food preserving method comprising the steps of: adding to the food plant extracts containing flavonoids and/or polyphenols; wrapping the food with a food wrapping material which is capable of radiating far infrared rays and absorbing ethylene gas; and keeping the wrapped food at a relatively low temperature. The far infrared radiating ceramic causes the activation of the enzyme in the food; elimination of ethylene gas and other undesired gas from the food; and sterilization of the food. The plant extract applied to the food prevents the oxidation of the food. The cooperative effect of the wrapping material and the plant extract applied to the food assures that discoloration, appearance of oil or fat on the food surface, water dripping and degradation of taste are prevented for an elongated period.
