Both ends of a can may be flanged by rotating the can with a support 15 and a die 17 and extruding the end to be flanged between the die and balls 26 mounted adjustably in a stationary, divided carrier 22. The die 17 and support 15 may be mounted in the chuck and tailstock of a lathe and the carrier 22 in the cross-slide. The balls may be replaced by rolls (35) or one or more stationary surfaces (41), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), and the can may have a welded, soldered or glued seam.

In a method of forming a neck and flange at the open end of a thin cylindrical metal can body, the can body is held endwise under compression whilst an axial shortening force and a radial deforming force are applied to the can body sidewalls, by relative axial movement between the can body on the one hand and, on the other hand, an external forming tool and an internal tool edge which are kept at constant axial spacing from each other, so that the neck and flange are formed in free space without any need for internal or external tools shaped to the required profile; any desired shape can be obtained by varying the characteristics of the relative axial and radial motions.

More specifically, the present invention relates to methods of manufacturing a metallic container having an opening with inwardly facing threads. A can is formed including a body having a bottom wall with an electromagnetically formed contoured sidewall extending therefrom and a necked end. The open end of the sidewall is first pre-necking to form a reduced diameter section. Thereupon, the sidewall is electromagnetically formed to form an outwardly expanding contoured sidewall. The can is then subjected to a necking process proximate the reduced diameter section to achieve a further reduced diameter conical necked end. The necking process may be performed by radially inwardly advancing an external forming member into contact with the sidewall against counterpressure provided by a pair of relatively axially displaceable inner members disposed within the can interior. Alternatively, the necking process may be spin flow necking.

Two-piece metal aerosol container and method of manufacture are provided in accordance with the present invention. A rolled and longitudinally welded cylindrical tube forms the container body, including a cylindrical sidewall and reduced diameter shoulder and neck portions (formed by a sequential necking process), while a separate metal base component is attached via a crimped seam. The open-top end of the container neck portion is curled to receive a manually actuatable dispensing valve assembly. The container is resistant to internal pressures in excess of 311 psi (2150 kPa) and offers increased strength and pressure resistance (compared to a three piece rolled metal aerosol container), while being easy to manufacture and low in cost.

A method for manufacturing a can comprising:forming a shoulder, which is reduced in a diameter toward a side of a mouth of the can, and which has a thickness of 0.1 to 0.3 mm, on a side of an upper end of a cylindrical body of the can in a can axis direction,forming a three-dimensionally shaped portion on the shoulder by using an inner roll having a receiver, which has at least one of a concave portion and a convex portion, and which has a diameter reduced portion corresponding to a shape of the shoulder, for receiving the shoulder from inside; andan outer roll, which has at least one of a concave portion and a convex portion corresponding to the receiver of the inner roll, for pressing the shoulder from outside, wherein, when forming a three-dimensionally shaped portion on the shoulder, the inner roll and the outer roll are rotated relative to the can, in a state in which the receiver of the inner roll and the outer roll clamp the shoulder from outside and inside.2. The method for manufacturing the can according to claim 1 , whereina ratio of a maximum outside diameter of the shoulder to an inside diameter of the mouth of the can is 1.05 to 1.58.3. The present disclosure provides methods and a necking apparatus to reduce a first diameter of an open end of a container body to a second diameter. The necking apparatus includes a necking die and a die guide. The die guide is selectively moveable relative to the necking die to guide the open end of the container body into engagement with the necking die. The die guide includes a flange that extends into a cylindrical bore of the die guide. The flange is configured to engage a shoulder of the container body when the die guide is in a first clamping position relative to the necking die. After engaging the container shoulder with the flange, the die guide moves toward the necking die into a second necking position such that the open end contacts the necking die and the first diameter of the open end is reduced to the second diameter.

In the present invention, there is disclosed an apparatus for reducing the diameter of an open end of a container, the apparatus comprising: a housing having an axis (135); a die (130) supported in the housing about the longitudinal axis thereof; and a radially expandable pilot member (140) supported in the housing and selectively moveable between a contracted position and an expanded position relative to the axis (135), the radially expandable pilot member (140) comprising a plurality of internal forming segments (150a, 150b) and a plurality of external forming segments (150c, 150d). Said internal forming segments (150a, 150b) are positioned inwardly of the external forming segments (150c, 150d) when the radially expandable pilot member (140) is selectively placed in the contracted position. When carrying out the reducing operation by making use of the above-described apparatus, the radially expandable pilot member (140) supported in the housing selectively moves between a contracted and expanded between a contracted position and an expanded positron relative to the longitudinal central axis (135). The radially expandable pilot member (140) expands and the open end of a container (16) is brought into contact with the die (130), the container (16) is pressed into the die (130), the radially expandable pilot member (140) contacts and the container is then removed from the die (130).
