By locating most of the complexity with the service provider, in particular the navigation computer (15) and geographical database (17), the system can be readily updated and the capital cost of the in-vehicle system, which in its simplest form may be a standard cellular telephone (1), can be minimised. The user makes a request for guidance information, and the system, having determined the user's present location, then transmits instructions to the user. The present invention is directed to utilizing monitoring devices (200) for determining the effectiveness of various locations, such as media display locations (150) for an intended purpose (media display exposure). The monitoring devices (200) are distributed to a number of study respondents. The monitoring devices (200) track the movements of the respondents. While various technologies may be used to track the movements of the respondents, at least some of the location tracking of the monitoring device (200) utilize a satellite (105) location system such as the global positioning system ("GPS"). These movements of the respondent and monitoring device (200) at some point coincide with exposure to a number of media displays (150). Geo data (movement data) collected by the monitoring devices, is downloaded to a downloaded server (300), for determining which media displays (150) the respondent was exposed to. A system and method for determining which of a plurality of travel paths is taken by vehicles through area in which the performance of an automatic vehicle location (AVL) system is reduced. In one embodiment, the present invention divides a geographic region into a plurality of signature zones which are further divided into a plurality of signature zone cells. The signature zone cells in each signature zone correspond to travel paths that pass through an area having structures that prevent reception of GPS signals or any area where GPS alone is not sufficient to discern travel path. The present automatic vehicle path determination system then calculates correlation values for positions in each signature zone cell that correspond to the travel paths that pass through the signature zone. A wireless vehicular positioning and communications system that combines inter-vehicular ranging and a self-organizing TDMA MAC protocol to both achieve more accurate positioning than is possible with GPS positioning and provide a deterministic channel for inter-vehicle communication. The band used for the system is divided into time slots, with each vehicle being able to obtain a time slot autonomously. Within a time slot, there is a ranging signal which occupies the full bandwidth; following the ranging signal, the band is divided into sub-bands. Some of the sub-bands are used to send packets according to the TDMA MAC protocol, and thus provide the deterministic channel; others are used for a non-deterministic channel which may be used for packets following the Internet Protocols. The system also uses mesh networking to permit vehicles to obtain advance warning of abnormal conditions in other vehicles.

A method of tracking railcars in transit using global positioning techniques involves determining the location of a railcar by using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and a satellite transceiver on board the locomotive, and a local area network of railcar tracking units. Instead of computing the GPS solution independently and transmitting it to a central station, the railcar tracking units transmit their unique identifications (IDs) to one of the tracking units in the local area network acting as an administrator tracking unit. The administrator tracking unit maintains a list of IDs and periodically transmits the list of IDs to the locomotive. A portable detachable tracking unit for shipping containers which provides communication via satellite with a central server is provided. The tracking unit has an antenna to communicate both with the GPS satellite and a two-way satellite, a computer, a GPS receiver, a satellite transmitter, a modem and an internal power source. The tracking unit can be attached and detached from the shipping container and is can be attached to the locking bars on the doors of the shipping container. The tracking unit may have sensors for determining when it has been tampered with or detached from the shipping container and transmitting that information to the central server. The tracking unit may have a memory capable of receiving and storing geo-fencing information on the specific route to be taken to the destination with the computer being programmed to determine if the tracking unit is outside of the geo-fence or not and communicating that information to the central server. The tracking unit may have a sensor to determine whether it has been detached from a door of the shipping container and transmitting that information to the central server. A system for tracking objects outdoors. Tags (202) attached to objects such as trailers include GPS receivers (203). Tags transmit uncorrected position and satellite data to a base station (205), where differential corrections are applied, providing 2-5 meter accuracy of the position of the tag and object. Tags are on a low duty cycle. When a tag powers on, it receives accurate time and current satellite data from the base station, enabling the tags to acquire the satellite signal quickly and with minimum power consumption. When a tag is out of base station range, the tag periodically calculates and archives its position. The tag may also include Real Time Locating Systems technology, to enable tracking to continue when the tag moves indoors and becomes inacessible to GPS satellite signals.

A system for tracking objects outdoors. Tags (202) attached to objects such as trailers include GPS receivers (203). Tags transmit uncorrected position and satellite data to a base station (205), where differential corrections are applied, providing 2-5 meter accuracy of the position of the tag and object. Tags are on a low duty cycle. When a tag powers on, it receives accurate time and current satellite data from the base station, enabling the tags to acquire the satellite signal quickly and with minimum power consumption. When a tag is out of base station range, the tag periodically calculates and archives its position. The tag may also include Real Time Locating Systems technology, to enable tracking to continue when the tag moves indoors and becomes inacessible to GPS satellite signals.

In a race each vehicle may have a proximity monitor to enable monitoring of distances between proximate vehicles. Each proximity monitor may include an RF transmitter and an RF receiver to communicate with proximate monitors and use signal timing information to determine spacing between monitors. The monitor may use Ultra Wide Band (UWB) signals to determine spacing and other protocols for communication. The monitor may also detect whether another monitor passes. An alert signal may be generated if the spacing information, and optionally other information, satisfies an alert criterion. A system including such monitors may enable race officials to monitor infringement of rules and enforce penalties in real time on a race course.

An asset location system includes a pager (12), a control processor (16), a GPS receiver (20) and a cell phone (14). During normal operation, the equipment on board the tracked asset is in a low power or sleep mode. Upon receiving a location quare from a call center (200), a signal to control processor is powered up. If location information is to be obtained from a particular asset, a GPS receiver obtains latitude and longitude information. This latitude and longitude information is put in a transmittable form by a modem (18). A cellular telephone module then transmits this information to a remote monitoring or response center (100). If desired, data reporting on asset condition may also be sent to remote monitoring or response center along with the location information.
