An encoder 901 has a rotatable shaft A with two rotating disks 59a, 5b provided thereon. Each rotating disk is formed with a pattern of slits S or reflective areas. Respective photosensors are associated with each disk 57a, 57b and are mounted on a common surface. As the disk rotates, output signals are produced by the photosensors according to the variation in the intensity of light reflected or transmitted by the pattern. The angular relationship between said disks is selected to provide, on rotation thereof, output signals which have a predetermined phase difference, eg a quarter phase difference, to enable the direction of rotation to be determined. The encoder may be used to determine the amount, speed and direction of rotation of motor driven mechanisms in a zoom lens camera.

As shown, the ring 1 has an external screw-thread 7 engaging an internal thread 4 on a member 5 to be mounted on the camera, and an internal screw-thread 8 engaged by a thread 9 on a tube 10 to which mountings of the lenses 2, 3 are screwed, so that rotation of the ring causes axial movement of the lenses. The range-scale 13 is carried by the outer surface of the ring 1. An iris diaphragm 16, operated by a rotatable ring 17, is provided.

This invention provides a vision system housing having a front plate assembly that accommodates a plurality of lens mount types. The front plate includes a central aperture that is located at a predetermined axial (camera axis) distance from a plane of an image sensor. The aperture is stepped from a wider diameter adjacent to the front to a narrower diameter more adjacent to the sensor. This arrangement enables threaded mounting of a plurality of lens mount types, for example M12 and C-Mount. The threaded base for the M12 lens is provided in the smaller-diameter, interior portion of the front plate aperture, adjacent to the sensor. The threaded base for the C-Mount lens is provided at the front of the front plate, adjacent to the exterior surface of the front plate and housing. The exterior (front) surface of the front plate includes threaded holes and a removable spring clip arrangement constructed and arranged to accommodate a liquid lens positioned over the aperture with an associated lens assembly mounted within the aperture and in optical communication with the liquid lens. The lens is operated using an electrical connection provided by a cable that interconnects with a multi-pin socket positioned on the front plate aside the aperture.
