A process for reducing the amount of overhead data in ATM cell headers prior to transmission both upstream and downstream on an HFC cable plant or other transmission media using SCDMA on at least the upstream path, without loss of either IP or Ethernet addressing information. A virtual link between each remote unit and a central unit is established using multiplexing to establish a virtual link to every remote unit. Downstream ATM cells are optimized by stripping off all but 2 bytes to leave a 50 byte cell. Incoming IP packets have their IP addressing information used to look up Ethernet domain address information for the RU and destination process to which this RU is coupled. A system for bidirectional communication of digital data between a central unit and a remote unit wherein the need for tracking loops in the central unit has been eliminated. The central unit transmitter generates a master carrier and a master clock signal which are used to transmit downstream data to the remote units. The remote units recover the master carrier and master clock and synchronize local oscillators in each remote unit to these master carrier and master clock signals to generate reference carrier and clock signals for use by the remote unit receiver. These reference carrier and clock signals are also used by the remote unit transmitters to transmit upstream data to the central unit. An optical fiber communications system uses spread spectrum code division multiple access techniques to achieve better bandwidth utilization. A transmitting user in the system encodes the optical signal using a first coding mask, and a receiving user decodes the received signal using two decoding masks, all of the masks having lengths N. The first mask is divided into two sections of lengths N/2 each, one of the sections defining a first sub-code of length N/2, while the other section blocks light. Each of the second and third masks is also divided into two sections, which correspond t o the two sections of the first mask. The section of the second mask corresponding to the coded section of the first mask has a second code that is identical to the first code, and the section of the second mask correspondin g to the blocked section of the first mask is also blocked. The section of the third mask corresponding to coded section of the first mask has a third code that is complementary to the first code, and the section of the third mask corresponding to the blocked section of the first mask is also blocked. Some users on the system have masks in which the first of the two sections are blocked and the second of the two sections are coded, while other users have masks in which the second of the two sections are blocked and the first of t he two sections are coded. The first codes used to code the encoding masks are selected from a set of unipolar codes that are derived from a set of balance d bipolar orthogonal codes.

Free-space communication systems and methods are provided. The systems include a transmitter that combines multiple sets of radio-frequency-modulated optical carrier frequencies for transmission across free space using multiple transmission apertures. Different sets of signals are filtered to form single sideband signals. The different sets of single sideband signals are then combined to form dense wavelength division multiplexed signals. In addition, combined sets of signals of different polarizations can be combined. A receiver can include a single receive aperture.

The invention dispenses with calibration of the optical frequency of the light source and permits the use of many codes without increasing the transmission bandwidth used. Let the optical frequency width of the light source be represented by FSR and the code length of every code be represented by FSR, the codes are made to be orthogonal to each other. The optical intensity-frequency characteristic of an n-th optical code signal is set to Cn(f) = (1 + cos(2Àsf/FSR + rÀ/2))/2 (where s is an integer in the range from 1 to maximum number of codes/2, and r = 0 or 1) to provide orthogonality between the optical code signals. Alternatively, optical frequency chips are sequentially assigned to chip sequences forming the optical code signals, the optical frequency of each chip "1" is output, and a filter is provided with an optical filtering characteristic of a concatenated code which is a repeated continuation of, for example a second-order Hadamard code word (0101) or (0011), and light emitted from the light source is passed through the filter to form the optical code signal. An encoding optical frequency region 31 and a decoding optical frequency region 32 are so chosen as to cover a range of drift of the source frequency. In Fig. 13, ”F 1 and ”F 2 indicate drifts of the source frequency.

A multi-user optical fiber communications system uses spread spectrum code division multiple access techniques to achieve better bandwidth utilization. Each channel of the system is provided with light source that is temporally and spectrally modulated by an encoder. Modulation is accomplished by first passing the data through a pulse modifier to obtain a stream of shortened pulses with a reduced duty cycle. The modulated light is coupled to a fiber and data are recovered by the decoder. The source includes a superluminescent fiber source that is split multiple times and amplified in a hierarchical manner to produce a plurality of like sources. The like sources are decorrelated by adding delays to the different sources. Each of the encoders includes an encoding mask having a first code that encodes the optical signal. Light, spatially encoded by the mask and temporally modulated with data, is transmitted over a fiber link with the signals of other users and received by a decoder. Within each decoder, a polarization insensitive separator splits the received light into two equal power components which are provided to two decoding masks used to decode the signal. One of the masks has a second code identical to the first code and the other mask has a third code complementary to the first code. The output light beams filtered by the masks are differentially detected to generate an output signal, which is further processed for data recovery. The electrical signal is low pass filtered and electrically square law detected. The first codes are selected from a set of unipolar codes derived from a set of balanced bipolar orthogonal codes. The codes may be either binary or analog.
