This invention discloses highly scalable and modular automated optical cross connect switch devices which exhibit low loss and scalability to high port counts. In particular, a device for the programmable interconnection of large numbers of optical fibers (100s-1000s) is provided, whereby a two-dimensional array of fiber optic connections is mapped in an ordered and rule-based fashion into a one-dimensional array with tensioned fiber optic circuit elements tracing substantially straight lines there between. Fiber optic elements are terminated in a stacked arrangement of flexible fiber optic circuit elements with a capacity to retain excess fiber lengths while maintaining an adequate bend radius. The combination of these elements partitions the switch volume into multiple independent, non-interfering zones, which retain their independence for arbitrary and unlimited numbers of reconfigurations. A panel arrangement comprising:a chassis having a depth extending between a front and a rear of the chassis and a width extending between first and second sides of the chassis, the chassis defining an opening at the front providing access to an interior of the chassis, the chassis including a removable rear portion that selectively covers the interior of the chassis at the rear when mounted to a remainder of the chassis and provides access to the interior of the chassis through the rear when removed from the remainder of the chassis;a plurality of groups of fiber optic adapters, each group of fiber optic adapters being separately slidable relative to the chassis between a retracted position and an extended position, the extended position being located forward of the retracted position along the depth of the chassis, each group of fiber optic adapters having the fiber optic adapters of the group arranged in a row, and each group of fiber optic adapters including side rails extending along the depth of the chassis at opposite sides of the row, wherein the groups of fiber optic adapters are arranged so that a plurality of groups extends along the width of the chassis; andan interior cable routing area disposed rearward of the fiber optic adapters, wherein removing the rear portion of the chassis from the remainder of the chassis provides access to the interior cable routing area.3. A radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based configuration detection system for automatically detecting, directing, and/or configuring the physical configuration of a complex system constituted by a set of one or more types of mateable components. The RFID configuration detection system utilizes a set of mateable RFID tags arranged so that each mateable component includes at least one mateable RFID tag. Each RFID tag includes information about its associated component and is arranged so that when the components are mated, their associated RFID tags also are mated. The system uses at least one RFID reader to read RFID tag signals from the RFID tags. The RFID tag signals provide information about mating status of the component, as well as information about components themselves. An information processing system operably connected to the RFID reader receives and process information concerning the number and type of mated connections and thus the configuration. Changes to the configuration, such as mated connections being unmated, can be tracked to provide real-time configuration information.

A connector arrangement includes a plug nose body; a printed circuit board positioned within a cavity of the plug nose body; and a plug cover that mounts to the plug nose body to enclose the printed circuit board within the cavity. The printed circuit board includes a storage device configured to store information pertaining to the electrical segment of communications media. The plug cover defines a plurality of slotted openings through which the second contacts are exposed. A connector assembly includes a jack module and a media reading interface configured to receive the plug. A patch panel includes multiple jack modules and multiple media reading interfaces.
