After intracapsular cataract extraction has been successfully completed the artificial lens, held securely in the Binkhorst implant forceps, is introduced into the anterior chamber. Surgical staple

A surgical staple for use in joining the skin or fascia of a patient. The staple is adapted to be formed about an anvil during emplacement. The staple has points formed by diagonal cuts across the ends, and its configuration prior to emplacement is such, that the diagonal cuts are perpendicular to the upper surface of the anvil and the skin or fascia, whereby the staple penetrates the skin or fascia without the tendency to slide therealong. The configuration is such that at initial contact of the staple points with the skin or fascia, the points lie substantially in the plane of the forming corners of the anvil, thereby affording greater skin gathering during emplacement. The configuration disclosed facilitates stacking of the staples for use in a cartridge, and provides for an improvement in the space factor within the cartridge over staples of conventional shape.

A U-shaped clip intended to be deformed to enclose and close the mouth of a flexible tube or bag, comprising a pair of limbs of substantially constant cross-section and a web joined to the limbs, respectively at a pair of transition points, the cross-sections of the web and transition points differing from and having a higher section modulus than the cross-section of the limbs. Advantageously the limbs are round in cross-section and the web at the middle is rectangular with rounded corners, the web changing in cross-section gradually from the middle to the transition points. Indentations may be provided on the outside of the limbs near their ends to facilitate buckling of the limbs toward one another when the clip is worked upon by a closing tool. The clips are assembled one behind the other with their limbs forming two parallel lines, constituting a magazine for supply to the closing tool.

A surgical fastening system includes a fastener having a plurality of individual fastener pairs each having a piercing element with a pin that pierces the tissue to be repaired and a receiver portion that interlocks with the pin of a corresponding piercing element. A fastener dispenser holds the piercing elements and receiver elements in relative juxtaposition and in a predetermined geometric configuration, such as a circle. After the tissues to be joined are positioned between the piercing and receiving elements held in the dispenser, the dispenser is adjusted to draw the elements together capturing the tissue therebetween. A fastening staple is provided which comprises a pair of workpiece-penetrating legs and an interconnecting bridge. Arms are connected to the bridge at fulcrum points, and each arm is crimped to provide a surface extending below the plane of the bridge. As the staple is forced into the workpiece, the crimps engage the workpiece surface and force the arms to rotate out of the bridge plane to engage a screw, wire or similar member and fasten it to the staple workpiece.

Insulated staple and method of making the same

An insulated staple is formed from a U-shaped body member and a piece of flexible, plastic tube, mounted on the body member with the end portions of the tube positioned coaxially on the legs of the staple and with the intermediate portion of the tube extending between the legs and under a bridging section of the body member. The staple is made by cutting a section of plastic tubing from a larger, extended section and piercing the pointed legs of the U-shaped body member through one side wall of the tube into the tube interior. The end portions of the tube are bent into alignment with the parallel legs, and are driven onto the legs following the piercing operation so that the end portions are mounted coaxially on the legs. The intermediate portion of the tube between the points in the side wall pierced by the legs provides insulation between the bridging section of the body member and an electrical or other conduit captured by the staple when in use.

Staple-type fastener

A staple-type fastener includes a separate receiving member that is wider than the diameter of the staple prongs. In use, the prongs are inserted through sheets of material to be fastened together and then into the receiving member, which may be fitted with a tab to facilitate removal. One embodiment of the fastener includes a wide upper cross-member to further reduce the tendency of the staple to tear through fastened sheet materials. In another embodiment of the fastener a foldable tab on the receiving member is adapted to have the staple prongs bent over it, the tab facilitating straightening of the prongs for removal of the fastener from the sheets of material.

Wide fascia staple cartridge

A cartridge is provided for applying staples to the disunited fascia of a patient. The cartridge is adapted to associate with a surgical stapling instrument which supplies rectilinear thrust to power the cartridge. The cartridge houses a plurality of staples mounted on a flexible belt. A pusher is slidably mounted in the cartridge for forming the staples around an anvil. A spring pawl associated with the pusher moves the staples into a position ready to be fired as the forwardmost staple is being formed around the anvil. As a staple is formed around the anvil, a spring associated with the cartridge cover holds the staple against the anvil. This spring also provides the function of ejecting the staple from the cartridge after it has been formed. On the return stroke of the pusher, a spring pawl arrangement associated with the cartridge cover prevents the belt and staples from moving rearward away from the anvil. The staples have a wide spacing between the points of the staple arms and enclose a large amount of fascia as the arms of the staples sweep through an arc as the staples ae being formed. Also, the staples are formed into a configuration in which the arms of the staples resist being pulled apart so that the staples will not be inadvertently disconnected from the fascia.

One-piece surgical staple

The anvilless surgical stapler includes a pair of stapling assemblies which are mounted on the articulated handles of an applicator. Each stapling assembly includes a mounting block and a staple cartridge which is slidably mounted within the block. Further, each cartridge has a housing with a plurality of openings in which staples are slidably received along with a plurality of pushers. When the stapling assemblies are brought together, one or more ribs in the mounting blocks cause the pushers to fire the staples from the openings of the staple cartridge housings. A pair of deformable lips are also provided at the mouth of each opening for deforming the legs of each staple inwardly toward each other in order to embed into the tissue without penetrating into the tissue. The lips also permit passage of the deformed staples under the biasing force of the pushers.

A surgical staple-deforming anvil for deforming the staples has a staple-receiving face formed with a pair of elongated, non-collinear pocket-like depressions each having an entry end lying on a longitudinal axis parallel to the back span of the staple, and an exit end. The respective exit ends of the pocket depressions are located on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis. Colored staples

Colored staples with color identification components are disclosed. A plurality of staples is provided. Each such plurality has a central section in a first plane and end sections in planes spaced parallel with each other and perpendicular to the first plane. The staples have a common cross-sectional configuration throughout the majority of their extents and are formed with points at the ends of their ends remote from their central sections. Each plurality of the staples has a generally rectangular cross-section with parallel interior and exterior faces and parallel lateral faces therebetween. A plurality of cylindrical sleeves, one for each staple, are provided. Each sleeve has an interior opening of a rectangular cross-sectional configuration of a size and shape corresponding to the cross-sectional configuration of the staples and mounted thereon to cover essentially the entire central section. The color of the sleeves are constant for the plurality of staples to assist in identification purposes.

Self-filling staple fastener

A staple fastener is provided with filler material disposed between its leg portions for filling a cavity in a substrate, which cavity is formed above a head of the staple when the staple is driven into the substrate. The filler material extrudes from the staple as it is driven into the substrate. In accordance with the preferred method, the staple fasteners are driven into the substrate with a power tool applicator to form the cavity and then a tampering plunger tamps the extruded filler material to conform to the surface of the substrate. In the preferred method, a first plunger is actuated first to drive the staple; and a second tamping plunger at an angle to the first plunger is actuated after the first plunger is retracted to tamp the material into cavity and then to smooth the exterior surface of the filler material to conform to the adjacent surface. Preferably, the first plunger causes the filler material to be driven into an opening for the second plunger; and, after the lower end of the plunger lifts from the head of the staple and exposes the cavity, the second plunger pushes the filler material into the cavity to fill the cavity and tamps the filler material in the cavity.

A fastening device comprises a “U” shaped spacer wherein the recess of the “U” shape is captured by the upper cross bar of a staple when the staple is used to fasten a protective sheeting to an item to be stored or transported. The spacer has a flat bottom surface and a flat side surface. The flat bottom surface increases the surface area of the staple in contact with the item during transport thereby reducing the chances that the protective sheeting may become torn from the item. The flat side surface increases the surface area of the standard staple during removal of the plastic sheeting because the spacer rotates about the crossbar of the staple. This rotation of the spacer reduces frictional contact between the spacer and the protective sheeting so that when the plastic sheeting is pulled from the lumber, the plastic sheeting will pull the spacer and the staple therefrom. In a preferred embodiment, the staples and the spacers are fed along flat, parallel elongate axes underneath the handle of a staple gun to allow one-handed fastening of the staples and the spacers to a lumber unit.
