Non-catalytic recuperative reformer

A non-catalytic recuperative reformer has a flue gas flow path for conducting hot flue gas from a thermal process and a reforming mixture flow path for conducting a reforming mixture. At least a portion of the reforming mixture flow path is embedded in the flue gas flow path to permit heat transfer from the hot flue gas to the reforming mixture. The reforming mixture flow path contains substantially no material commonly used as a catalyst for reforming hydrocarbon fuel (e.g., nickel oxide, platinum group elements or rhenium), but instead the reforming mixture is reformed into a higher calorific fuel via reactions due to the heat transfer and residence time. In a preferred embodiment, extended surfaces of metal material such as stainless steel or metal alloy that are high in nickel content are included within at least a portion of the reforming mixture flow path.

A first portion (13) of about 5 to about 40 percent of the total fuel (11) to be cracked and combusted is introduced to a cracking chamber (10) where it is combusted and cracked at a temperature below about 2200°F to produce a cracked products mixture (17). Oxygen-rich gas (14) of greater than about 30 volume percent oxygen is introduced to the cracking chamber (10) in about 5 to about 50 percent of the stoichiometric requirement for complete combustion of the first portion (13) of fuel introduced to that chamber (10). Cracked products mixture (17), a second remaining portion of fresh fuel (21) and oxidizer (24) having sufficient oxygen for substantially complete combustion of the combustible portion of the cracked products mixture and the fresh fuel are introduced to a combustion chamber (20) wherein the combustible portion of the cracked products mixture and the fresh fuel are combusted. The process and apparatus provide continuous operation of a fuel cracking chamber when used with regenerative furnaces, such as in the glass making industry.

Abstract of the Disclosure A process and apparatus for oxygen-rich combustion wherein a first portion of about 5 to about 40 percent of the total fuel to be cracked and combusted is introduced to a cracking chamber where it is combusted and cracked at a temperature below about 2200°F to produce a cracked products mixture. Oxygen-rich gas of greater than about 30 volume percent oxygen is introduced to the cracking chamber in about 5 to about 50 percent of the stoichiometric requirement for complete combustion of the first portion of fuel introduced to that chamber. Cracked products mixture, a second remaining portion of fresh fuel and oxidizer having sufficient oxygen for substantially complete combustion of the combustible portion of the cracked products mixture and the fresh fuel are introduced to a combustion chamber wherein the combustible portion of the cracked products mixture and the fresh fuel are combusted. the process and apparatus provide continuous operation of a fuel cracking chamber when used with regenerative furnaces, such as in the glass making industry.

The system includes a plurality of concentric radiant tubular members arranged in a manner providing an outer annular region in which the combustion process is carried out, an inner tubular member through which exhaust gases are exhausted from the system, and intermediate annular regions between the inner tubular member and the outer annular region through which preheated oxidant is provided to the outer annular region for the combustion process. In accordance with one embodiment of this invention, the internal recuperator is used as a fuel reformer.

Process and apparatus for emissions reduction from waste incineration

A furnace for combustion wherein a combustion chamber is configured such that waste can be advanced from a drying zone, to a combustion zone, to a burnout zone, and then into an ash pit. An air source provides air for drying, combustion and burnout in a primary combustion zone (PCZ). Fuel or a fuel/recirculated flue gas mixture is injected above the PCZ to create a mostly reducing substoichiometric secondary combustion zone (SCZ), to reduce NOx and decompose other nitrogen bearing compounds entering the SCZ. Vitiated air is injected into the combustion chamber above the mostly reducing SCZ. A process for combustion of the waste includes introducing the waste into the combustion chamber, advancing the waste through the combustion chamber, supplying combustion air to the combustion chamber for drying and combusting the waste and final ash burnout, and removing ash products from the combustion chamber. The fuel or fuel/recirculated gas mixture is supplied into the combustion chamber to create substoichiometric conditions for NOx reduction and nitrogen bearing compounds decomposition. Overfire air is supplied into the combustion chamber above the substoichiometric zone for thorough mixing and at least partial burnout of combustibles contained within the waste/fuel combustion products.

The unheated liquid in the direct contact chamber condenses any moisture in the hot flue gases, forming contaminated liquid droplets and the contaminated liquid droplets are introduced into an indirect heating chamber of the hybrid direct/indirect liquid heater where they are indirectly heated by contact with the exterior of the combustor-heat exchanger, forming heated contaminated liquid. Gaseous contaminants are separated from the heated contaminated liquid, forming decontaminated liquid which is accumulated in a hot liquid storage.

A system and method for fuel reforming in which at least a portion of the exhaust gases from a combustion process, such as an industrial furnace, is mixed with a fuel, such as natural gas, and the mixture is introduced into a first stage heat exchange vessel in which the fuel is reformed. The reformed fuel is then returned to the combustion process for burning. In accordance with one embodiment, primary combustion oxidant is introduced into a second stage heat exchange vessel in which it is heated by a portion of the exhaust gas exiting the first stage heat exchange vessel. The heated oxidant is then introduced into the combustion process for burning of the fuel(s) therein.

In accordance with one embodiment, the secondary oxidant comprises preheated oxidant aspirated from the heat exchanger using industrial-grade oxygen, resulting in an oxygen-enriched mixture being injected into the combustion chamber downstream of the flame. As a result, NOx emissions are reduced without adverse effects on the overall furnace operation.

A method and apparatus for ultra-low pollutant emission combustion of fossil fuel is disclosed in which a first portion of fuel to be combusted is introduced into a primary combustion chamber together with primary combustion air, producing either a reducing or oxidizing combustion zone and a portion of water having a heat capacity equivalent to the heat capacity of a portion of primary combustion air. The first portion of fuel is combusted in the primary combustion chamber and the combustion products derived therefrom pass through an orifice into a secondary combustion chamber. Also introduced into the secondary combustion chamber is a second portion of fuel and secondary combustion air in an amount sufficient to complete combustion of the total amount of fuel in the apparatus. In addition, water is introduced into the secondary combustion chamber in an amount having a heat capacity equivalent to an amount of secondary combustion air. The products of combustion from the secondary combustion chamber are passed through an orifice into a dilution chamber into which dilution air is introduced, producing ultra-low pollutant emissions vitiated air. The vitiated air is subsequently discharged from the dilution chamber.
