A steer-drive interposes respective left and right orbital gear drives (20, 22) into the vehicle drivetrain between the engine/transmission (10, 12) and the respective propulsion axles associated with each side of the vehicle. The orbital drive units comprise only an input gear (54) and an output gear (58) interconnected by at least one orbiting cluster gear (60, 61) that is supported in a rotating housing and also meshes only with the input and output gears. The orbital units are designed so that (a) when rotation of the housing (64) is prevented, driving torque is transferred at speed ratios selected to be as close to 1:1 as is practical, and (b) when steering torque causes rotation of the housing, the steering torque is added simultaneously in equal and opposite directions to the orbital units, causing the drive on one side of the vehicle to slow down at the same rate. Dans une direction asservie pour véhicule à chenilles comprenant une pompe hydrostatique à huile 8, un moteur correspondant 10 et une unité d'entraînement hydrodynamique 14, on règle le débit spécifique d'entrée du moteur 10 en fonction de la caractéristique de l'unité hydrodynamique 14 de façon que lors de l'augmentation de la vitesse de cette dernière le débit du moteur 10 soit diminué et que par suite la vitesse de ladite unité 14 soit augmentée. A partir d'un certain couple exercé sur la direction, c'est l'effet de la pression qui prédomine pour assurer le réglage. Réduction au minimum possible des dimensions des organes.

A control system is provided for a tracked vehicle drive/steering system which has an engine driven hydraulic steering pump which drives a hydraulic steering motor. In one embodiment, the control system operates to gradually reduce the magnitude of the steering pump control signals if the vehicle is stationary, the clutch is engaged and these conditions persist for at least a certain time period, and to further or more rapidly reduce the magnitude if the vehicle seat is not occupied. In an alternate embodiment, the control system operates to limit the magnitude of the steering pump control signals as a function of the acceleration of wheel speed. In another alternate embodiment, the control system operates to quickly reduce the magnitude of the steering pump control signals if the vehicle is stationary, the clutch is engaged and the transmission is commanded to be in a non-neutral gear, between the time the gear is commanded and the vehicle motion begins.

A vehicle is provided with right and left traction drives powered by first and second reversible two-speed hydraulic motors. A solenoid-operated speed control valve is coupled to the motors for shifting the latter to high speed operation in response to the valve being energized. Travel control valves for the motor are coupled to switches connected in the circuitry for controlling the speed control valve such that during high speed operation of the vehicle the motors will be automatically downshifted in response to the travel control valves being operated to cause the vehicle to be turned.

In other embodiments the further ram 12 effects (a) both the application of a brake (4) between the torque converter 2 and the gear-box 3 and a reduction in torque output from the torque converter 2 or (b) both the application of brake 4 and the disengagement of gearing within gear-box 3.

A flow divider-combiner unit controls the volume flow to the wheels in one direction of travel and from the wheels in the other direction, the steering control being functionally intermediate the flow divider-combiner and the wheel assembly for transferring one or more units of fluid volume or pressure from one wheel circuit to the other wheel circuit to effect transitory wheel speed differentiation and thereby turning of the steer wheel assembly to a different steering angle. The hydrostatic control is also operative with independently mounted drive-steer wheels connected by the usual steering control rod.

The invention relates to a system allowing an automotive vehicle moved by hydraulic motors to be driven according to the working conditions, by turning the wheels or by skidding the wheels. The invention consists of two circuits (K and L) for supplying hydraulic motors actuating guiding wheels mounted on pivots (B1 - B2 - B3 - B4). These circuits, by virtue of the valves (J1 - J2) make it possible instantaneously, as desired by the driver, to block the left-hand wheels or the right-hand wheels by means of a manipulator (M) without preventing directional control by orientating the stub axles with the aid of a steering wheel and of the ORBITAL distributor (F). This invention may be applied to agricultural or industrial automotive vehicles such as trucks, lifts, loaders with tyres, mechanical diggers and all loading or earthmoving vehicles intended to work in lanes or tight spaces.

A control is provided for the drive of a motor vehicle with differential-speed steering and with a hydrostatic power transmission unit on each side of the vehicle, where the adjusting element of each of the two power transmission units is provided with a spring-loaded adjusting piston that can be acted upon by control pressure, in which case two pairs of control pressure pick-offs are provided, of which two are assigned to forward and backward movement and the other two are assigned to cornering, where a pressure-dependent switchable pilot valve is installed in the connecting line between a control pressure pick-off assigned to a cornering direction and the adjusting element of the assigned power transmission unit, the pilot valve connects this control pressure pick-off assigned to the cornering direction with a specific pressure chamber of the adjusting element of the power transmission unit on the side of the vehicle on the inside of the curve, so that through actuation of the control pressure pick-off determining the curve radius, the latter can be steadily diminished through the point where the power transmission shaft on the inside of the curve stands still and up to the oppositely directed rotation of the power transmission units on the two sides of the vehicle.

A B S T R A C T A hydrostatic control system for a ground driven vehicle comprises a pair of hydrostatic pumps each controlled by a rotatable arm extending from a servo valve mounted there-on along with a pair of hydrostatic motors each driven by a respective one of the pumps and a pair of ground engaging means each on respective sides of the vehicle. A pair of pump adjusting means, one for each of the pumps, comprises a first crank having a first end and a second end, pivotally mounted intermediate said ends adjacent a respective one of the pumps, a steering linkage pivotally mounted adjacent the first end of the first crank; a connecting link pivotally mounted adjacent a first end thereof adjacent the second end of the first crank; a first linear member pivotally mounted adjacent its first end adjacent a second end of the connecting link and pivotally mounted adjacent its second end to the arm of the servo valve; a second linear member pivotally mounted adjacent its first end adjacent the first end of the first member and the second end of the connecting link and a second crank pivotally mounted adjacent its first end adjacent a second end of the second member. Tying means pivotally mounted adjacent a second end of each of the second cranks directly link their movement.

A control system is provided for a tracked vehicle drive/steering system which has an engine driven hydraulic steering pump which drives a hydraulic steering motor. The steering pump is responsive to steering pump control signals, and an operator manipulated steering wheel generates steering command signals. A steering motor provides an input to a differential track drive mechanism which responds to manipulation of the steering wheel and drives left and right tracks, turning the vehicle. The control system includes a steering wheel position sensor, a steering motor position sensor and a wheel speed sensor. The control system generates a motor displacement value as a function of the steering wheel position and the wheel speed. The control system also generates a motor target position value as a function of the motor displacement, and generates a motor desired position value as a function of the target position value. The control system also generates a motor position error value as a function of the desired position value and of the actual steering motor position signals, and generates the steering pump control signals as a function of the steering motor position error signals.

In a track type vehicle in which the tracks are each driven through an hydraulically actuated two speed, e.g. planetary, gear, 32, 33, and 34, 35, the driven shafts 29, 31 of which can be braked 36, 37, steering of the vehicle is effected by turning a steering wheel 100, and application of a brake pedal 95 during straight line driving and steering is effective to maintain engaged at the same pressure those of the elements 32-37 previously engaged, and to engage at a low pressure, e.g. less than 100 p.s.i., to allow slipping, those of the elements 32-37 not previously engaged. The power train of the vehicle, Fig. 1, provides ten forward gears and four reverse gears by means of, (a) a front transmission 11, operative in two conditions, mechanical overdrive 21 or split drive through a torque converter 19, (b) a range transmission including speed clutches 22, 23 and range clutches 24, 25 and 26, and (c) a cross drive transmission comprising the elements 32-37. The speed and range clutches are actually brakes holding ring gears of planetary trains. Two manual ratio selector levers 82, 81, the shift patterns of which are illustrated in Fig. 3, (not shown), operate on the front transmission, and the rest respectively. The hydraulic control system for the power train comprises a pump 41 which directs hydraulic fluid to a regulating valve unit 43, which directs the fluid to two main sections: (a) that controlling the front transmission and comprising the regulator valve unit 43, a dump and fill valve 51 for the torque converter, and a torque divider selector valve 104, and (b) that controlling the rest of the power train and comprising the unit 43, a lubrication relief valve 56, a pressure control valve unit 63, speed selector and range selector valve units 66 and 71, steering pressure control valve unit 61 and steering selector valve unit 84. A control system for steering and travel of a skid-steer vehicle having right hand and left hand driving units, e.g. hydrostatic motors, has a pivoted speed input link 18 which includes two slotted cams 11, one for each of the drive units. A respective cam follower 23 engages in the slot 17 of each cam 11. The followers 23 are connected to speed control members 21 of the drive units. For steering, the follower 23 of one or both units is displaced along a slot 17 by a respective cam 25 for differential movement of control members 21. Each slot 17 is such that, with the speed signal set to zero, the movement of a follower 23 in the slot 17 causes no movement of pivot 19, and thus of either of the drive units. The operation of the steering control thus will not cause movement if the vehicle is stationary.
