The cardboard is folded easily to produce formers to hold e.g. pleats in garments (e.g. synthetic material. pref. nylon, polyester, polyurethane) during treatment (e.g. steam pressing). The cardboard can be easily scored with a variety of different patterns so that it be folded into a variety of different shapes.

[Class 141.] A pleating appliance comprises a pair of frames 1 carrying removable or hinged pleating blades 8 and fixed at any suitable distance apart by means of spring-pressed brackets 5 engaging the edge of a board 4. The blades are held in tongues or in hook-shaped parts 7 which may, as shown, be arranged in staggered relationship with the corresponding hooks turned in an opposite direction. The procedure consists of taking the fabric from a roll (3), passing it between rollers (2) and through a duct (4, 6) and crushing it in three-dimensional folds in a net (8). The compressed fabric is then subjected to saturating steam under a pressure of 1.4-3 bars and at a temperature of 108[deg]C for a predetermined time in an autoclave. Before the heat and pressure treatment the fabric can be printed, infrared treated and/or waterproofed.
