The invention further encompasses a bleaching earth obtainable by this process and to the use thereof for bleaching of raw animal or vegetable oil. - drying a water-rich raw clay to a reduced water content, - mixing the raw clay having a reduced water content with 1%-5% by weight (based on the weight of the raw clay) of a solid organic and/or concentrated inorganic acid, - grinding the mixture of raw clay having a reduced water content and solid organic and/or concentrated inorganic acid, Process according to Claim 1, characterized in that the water-rich raw clay has a water content of 50% to 70% by weight. Process according to any of Claims 1 to 5, characterized in that the proportion of solid organic acid or concentrated inorganic acid is 1%-3% by weight, based on the weight of the raw clay. Process according to any of Claims 1 to 6, characterized in that the water-rich raw clay contains a mixed smectite-silica gel phase. Bleaching earth obtainable by the process according to any of Claims 1 to 7. Use of the bleaching earth according to Claim 8 for refining of fats and/or oils.
