1286395 Chrome-magnesia refractories CORHART REFRACTORIES CO 21 April 1970 [21 April 1969] 18910/70 Heading C1J A refractory batch consists of a mixture of a chemical grade chromite grain containing less than 4% SiO 2 , dead-burned magnesite grain, and fused grain composed of a melted and resolidified mixture of chemical grade chromite and dead burned magnesite and analysing 53- 58% by weight MgO on an oxide basis, wherein of the batch 10 to 35 wt. per cent is a chromite fraction whose particles are substantially all - 10 + 150 mesh (Tyler) and composed of the chromite grain, 30-60% is a coarse fraction whose particles are substantially all -4+20 mesh and composed of, based on the whole batch, 20- 60% of the fused grain and 0 to 40% of the magnesite grain, 0 to 30% is an intermediate fraction whose particles are substantially all -10+35 mesh and composed of the fused grain and/or the magnesite grain, 25 to 60% is a fine fraction whose particles are - 35 mesh and composed of, based on the whole batch, 10 to 40% of the magnesite grain and 0 to 50% of the fused grain, and 4 to less than 50% being + 28 mesh particles of at least one of the chromite grain and the magnesite grain. Suitable chromite is Transvaal chromite which can contain 18-21% Fe with a Or : Fe ratio of approximately 1À6. The batch can be used for ramming mixes or pressed into brick with 3% of a 10-33À3% aqueous solution of waxy polyethylene glycol or 0À25-3% of a 50% aqueous solution of lignin sulphite as tempering fluid. The pressed brick can be burned at 1600‹ C. or burned in service in which case the tempering fluid can be aqueous sodium silicate containing 0À25-5% glycerine or ethylene glycol as a humectant.
