Couplings, automatic. - In couplings of the kind in which a link engages a pivoted hook, the link is guided by an inclined surface into contact with a spring-pressed trigger which turns the hook and retains it in the coupled position, and the hook is rotated for uncoupling by a cross-shaft actuated by pawl and ratchetwheel. The link member 1, 2, and a splayed member 8 carrying the hook 14, are connected together on each vehicle by pins 5, 7 and mounted on a pivot 3, and are supported in position for coupling by jointed arms 26, 28 provided on a cross-shaft 25 and formed with a forked end 29 to receive the pin 7. The link is retained in engagement within the hook by a spring-pressed catch 19, Fig. 3. The hook is lowered for uncoupling by a chain 23 connected to an arm 24 on the shaft 25, which is operated by a ratchet-wheel 30 and a double pawl 32, which may be set for either direction of rotation of the shaft, or in an intermediate inactive position to prevent unauthorized operation, by a key inserted at 37. the pawl being retained in either of these positions by a spring plunger 35. As the hook is lowered, the arms 26, 28 assume the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus disposing the forks 29 to receive the pins 7. Stops 38, 39 limit the movements of the shafts 25. Links 40 are provided for coupling with the usual non-automatic hook. According to the Provisional Specification, a spring-pressed abutment is arranged to press the hook at the rear at a point below the pivot of the hook when in the operable position, and at a point above the pivot when the hook is in the released or lowered position.
