a weight of about 8000 kg to 5. The part

[30]

o-force by [...] machines is rigidly attached,

[31]

so that it is false that it easily and

[32]

[33]

When drilling occurs in this way,

[40]

3o These drawbacks manifest advantage in-

[41]

particular when drills perpendicular-

[42]

shims which the pin is mounted in a support which can be displaced on a carriage. II result is a set of double bearing, first in the bearing of the pin and then in the slide rail.

[43]

With vertical drilling machines of this type, the mounting and the fixing of the workpiece are burdened in that Ton is forced to first depositing the workpiece to side of the machine, and then [...] under the center of the spindle. The machines have a narrow range between the pin and the wall of the post of the machine, so that large parts and those that provide large projections or similar sections cannot be machined. Mostly, the distance between the axes of the pins of these machines is not adjustable, the pins cannot be displaced parallel to one another, so that the machine is to be transformed when of center distances perforations change within the work piece, resulting in considerable costs.

[44]

The disadvantages of such drills vertical non-adjustable or adjustable pins are the following:

[45]

1° The machines have a weight of 5 to 8000 kg. and they are to be constructed very heavily;

[46]

2° The effort force is about 10 to 15 CV;

The booklet Price: 5 francs.

[47]

3" The part is deformed by its rigid attachment;

[48]

4° The different operations require tool carriers? blades to [...], destroying the texture of the material and deteriorates the accuracy;

[49]

5° The dual bearing play, in the bearing of the spindle and in the feed slide, night also the accuracy;

[50]

6° The workpiece is difficult to be placed in the machine and securing;

[51]

7° The ability to house the parts is restricted by the invariable range of the machine;

[52]

8° The parallel displacement between the pins is accompanied by difficulties due to the spindle drive.

[53]

The disadvantages of such vertical drilling machines have been already be removed partially by precision drilling machines known to a spindle, which are almost always vertical.

[54]

It is drilling machines with precision than the drilling was for the first time with a hard-metal knife and with large Vit [...] cutting (about 120 ni. per minute) and small advanced (about 0.08 to 0.1 mm. per revolution). As a result of the low pressure of these drills on the chip, the expenditure of extremely large force has been removed and, with the greater ease of assembly of the piece, the formations have been avoided. The tool knife not tear the texture of the perforation.

[55]

[...] In the precision, the rotational movement and the forward motion of the pin, are combined in a bearing, so that there is only one set and that the accuracy is substantially greater. Is maintained a heavy frame for these drills precision, to avoid the vibration.

[56]

The drill units have vertical accuracy, 3a for control of the pin, a long transmission, the transmission from the engine mounted to the base, through a gear, the housing wall and the head of the frame, from which it returns to the spindle to the knife, which gives rise to damaging vibrations that the frame of the machine cannot stop.

[57]

In vertical drilling machines precision more pins, that has been constructed later, particularly 55 occurred shudder vibration and to a greater degree. During the operation of these machines, the pins, as a result of the slip-off of the belt, all can not rotate at the same speed, 8o the pins occur between [...] librations due to the harmonics that occur.

[58]

The distance of about 800 to 000 mm.

[59]

between the axes of the two external pins, 55 distance which is often necessary for travelling engine construction, would lead to very heavy types of machines, while requiring only a small expenditure of force of about 2 CV. Furthermore, y0 in the machines of this kind, remains the disadvantage that large component parts having projections cannot be conveniently mounted and fixed.

[60]

In drilling machines vertical accuracy [...] to one or more pins, is actually avoided the following shortcomings:

[61]

1° The expending a great amount of effort;

[62]

2" The deformation of the workpiece by overtightening; go 3° The different operations requiring holders [...], multi-blade, which destroy the texture of the material and which adversely affect the accuracy;

[63]

1° The dual bearing play, in the bearing of the pin 85 and into the feed slide, also detrimental to the precision;

[64]

5° The parallel displacement between the pins, displacement against the difficulties due to the control of the pinsg 0.

[65]

However the following shortcomings could not be avoided:

[66]

1 The weight of 5° to 80U0 kg. and the resulting large; 2 ° φ The difficulty mounting the component on the machine;

[67]

3n The invariable range of the machine and thus the possibilities limited as to the mounting part.100 Instead, when it is vertical precision drills more pins, of a type heavy and at high rotational speed, is added the disadvantage of harmonic vibrations that take place there. The new drill precision in accordance with the invention has, on the known drills, the advantage that the weight is only -5 strate ron 1/4 that of a current machine for the same expenditure of force.

[68]

The transmission from the engine, via gears, of the wall of the frame of the machine, to the head thereof, level i o etc which is a substantial disadvantage of the known machines, is completely suppressed in the new machine. The pins thereof work not from top to bottom as heretofore, but low 15 at the top. In this machine, the rotational movement and the advancing movement are also arranged in a single bearing, thereby producing a highly accurate drilling.

[69]

o-The construction of the new machine mounts near the base of the machine all the mechanical elements necessary for the rotational movement and the advancing movement, of o. to such that the entire machine is a kind of Safety a low weight. The machine is thus made very stable and the vibrations are completely avoided; as well, vibration [...] o -3 niques which occur in drilling machines vertical accuracy are completely avoided in the [...] precision more pins. The block shaped construction of the machine 35 can be used without disadvantage of 1 to 8 pins may be moved easily between them and with great precision in their distances. Since the control elements of the machine are mounted at the bottom in the boot k o or in the block, the latter is relatively low, so that the workpieces can be inserted and fixed easily to an [...] convenient for the manipulation.

[70]

h 5 The machine has the further advantage that the work table and that it is fully clear pent thus supporting parts of all kinds, whatever their size the projections 5o is that they have, i.e. that there is no range bonded to the conventional vertical types of machines.

[71]

In the new machine, not only the disadvantages mentioned above eight cylindrical drills are all avoided, but the use of all known advantages in drilling precision, further, of the new drill precision, a machine for, in drilling, and yet have a low weight and the same expenditure of force, low that give in nothing in the amount to those special drills heavier and more expensive, and that the harsh much accuracy obtained.

[72]

An exemplary embodiment of the new machine is represented by accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a view of the machine;

Fig. 2 is Tine cutting the upper part of a with its support, and Figure 3 is a cut with X-X of Figure 2.1 is the base of the block crib on which rests the lower part 2 of the table secured to the base, and 3 is the slide table to which is attached the mounting plate 4. The mounting plate 4 carries the workpieces, for example two blocks of four 5 cylinders for automotive engines. The two pieces 5 are easily maintained and centred on the mounting plate 4 by the clamping device 6. In the base 1, near the bottom thereof, is arranged the spindle drive 7, to which the rotational movements are transmitted by means of pulleys which lie in a plane. The fast forward, and the working feed pins, are taken in both directions by the control housing 8, which is mounted laterally on the base. The entire machine is driven by a control group, for example an electric motor, mounted in rear of the machine. [...] The motor is switched on and off by means of a pedal switch 9. By moving the main lever 10 to the right, is rotated the pins and clutch engagement the fast forward, which causes the pins rotated into the workpiece 5, switching to the forward movement of the to the end of the cutting. At the end of the cutting, the forward movement stops by the inter-

432,942. Vertical - spindle boring - machines. JAGENBERG, P., Papierm³hle, near Solingen, Rhineland, Germany. Nov. 28, 1934, No. 34174. Convention date, Nov. 5. [Class 83 (iii)] A fine - boring machine having one or more spindles is characterized in that the spindles are arranged in a box - form bed and adapted to operate upwardly on work carried on the upper part of the bed, common bearing means serving for guiding the spindles during their rotary and axial feed motions. The spindles 7 with cutting tools 15, Fig. 2, are fed axially and arranged to operate from below the work 5 which may be a pair of engine cylinder blocks ; the slidable, slotted table 3 carrying the work is adapted to be held in a number of predetermined positions by latch mechanism 13 which may be moved to engage adjustable recesses in the slide and enable more than one set of bores to be operated upon with a single set-up. A sealing plate 16, Fig. 2, prevented from axial movement by the fixed ring 20 but rotating with the spindle 7 prevents cuttings from entering the common bearing 27. The cuttings are ejected by centrifugal actions through openings 18 in the fixed housing surrounding the spindles. Two further sealing rings 25, 26 which rotate with the spindles are provided.

observatories of the control housing 8, and, by doubling over the main lever 10 to the left, are braked is stopped and rotation of the spindles 7, after which the pins -5 return tees judgment by a rapid movement to their initial position.

The axial displacement of the pins 7 may also be performed by means of the wheel 11. Meanwhile jo the automatic feeding is locked in the housing 8 commando.

The table 3 can also be moved right and left by the wheel 12. The table 3 and the clamping plate 4 15 have a longitudinal groove for the pins 7. A device index 13 fixedly attached to the lower part 2 of the table makes it possible to adjust the axial spacing of the perforations, which die -20 depending from the part 5.

The pin 7 carries the tool holder 14, firmly connected thereto and the knife 13.

The chips removed during drilling onto the drip tray 10, which rotates with the pin 7 b 2, and they are projected by the centrifugal force on the wall cl ' a tube 17, and then sent, through an opening 1S provided in the tube, into the bowl chip accommodated in the base.

3o The tube 17 is screwed on the main bearing pins 19 and carries a stationary seal ring 20. The seal ring 20 prevents any axial displacement of the tray 16 and of the ring nut 21. The grooves 35 formed in the tray 16 are filled with a sealing material 22 which drives the tray 16 when the pins 7 also rotate and which wipes the chips that retains the pin 7. Between the labyrinths of the tray 4o 16 and of the seal ring 20 a sealing material 23 which prevents the parcels chip having could still enter the slot 24 from entering the main bearing 18.

To prevent any penetration 45 also parcels of finer dust which can be driven by the pins 7, two seal rings 25 and 26 which participate in the rotational movement are further screwed under the tray 16 ; these two rings, 5o which are mounted one behind the other, prevent penetration of parcels chip, even the finer, in the main bearing 19 and in its bearing 27.

summary. 55 A drill precision to one or more pins, whose movement of rotation and the advancing movement are combined in a single bearing, characterized in that the pins are mounted in a base f,0 crib and work from bottom to top, in order increase the accuracy of the bore with a low weight of the machine and the same expenditure of force, and maintain freedom of mounting the (J5 workpiece on the work table.

The machine may be further characterized in that:

a. The tube screwed onto the main bearing pins and having therein an opening0 chip evacuating carries a seal ring preventing, via cl ' [...] ring, any axial displacement of the turntable with the pin; y5 b. The chips that fall on the tray during drilling are rejected by outside through the centrifugal force through the opening in the said tube.
