Due to centrifugal forces, any cutting fluid (scattered by cutting operations) that reaches the surface of the taper tends to move on the surface of the taper and scatter away from the bearing, avoiding the intrusion of cutting fluid into the bearing. A flange having an internal taper matching the splayed taper of the tool-holding tip can be provided around the tip, making it more difficult for cutting fluid to reach the clearance between the tapers and further encouraging any intruding fluid to move and scatter away from the bearing.

Pressure upon the sensor head causes inward motion on the shaft, which in turn pushes the rod contact away from the knife contact, breaking an electrical connection between the two. The absence of gas and fluid communication helps to prevent contaminants from getting into the housing and allows the housing to optionally hold an inert gas to prevent corrosion to the electrical contacts.

The bearing of a machine tool spindle is sealed by a pair of wiping seals mounted on the shaft and resiliently urged into contact with opposite faces of a stationary ring through which the shaft extends. The very small clearance between the ring and the shaft is fed with gas for example air at low pressure. When there is no gas supply and for example when the shaft is stationary the seals contact the ring and the resilience ensures good contact and prevents seepage of for example lubricant along the shaft from one side of the seals to the other. When the shaft is to be driven, low pressure gas is supplied and this pressure deflects the seals to lift them from the face of the ring so that there is no frictional engagement and either power loss or heat generation, and any liquid which does go past the seals is thrown outwardly by centrifugal force and driven by the escaping gas.

An additive manufacturing tool configured to couple to a spindle of a computer numerical control (“CNC”) machine , the tool comprising:a plurality of drive wheels being movable between an engaged position wherein the plurality of drive wheels compress filament from a filament source against a drive disc and a disengaged position wherein the plurality of drive wheels are spaced apart from the filament; anda delivery assembly including a heating element and a nozzle having an outlet opening;wherein when the plurality of drive wheels are in the engaged position and the drive disc is rotated, the filament is drawn into the tool from the filament source and routed around the drive disc to the nozzle, where heat transferred from the heating element to the nozzle melts the filament so that the filament flows through the outlet opening.2. The spindle carrier assembly is rotatably supported by at least one set of tapered roller bearings (126, 128) bearing against an outer peripheral surface of the spindle carrier (30). The set of roller bearings (126, 128) are disposed in a notched annulus in an inner peripheral surface of a headstock upright (16) . Each roller bearing forms an acute included angle between the spindle carrier outer peripheral surface and a surface of the tapered bearing facing the spindle carrier. The set of tapered roller bearing (126, 128) is mechanically preloaded before machining operations commence. The spindle carrier (30) includes an interior manifold comprising passageways (224a-224f) between the spindle bearings (200, 202). A connector assembly (210) including a swivel connector is provided to route pressurized fluid in the hollow cavity of the spindle drive shaft (50) to the interior manifold of the spindle carrier (30) to preload the spindle bearings (200, 202).

When the gas is supplied, for example when the shaft is stationary, the suture is in contact with the ring, and the elasticity provides good contact, hindering the movement of the lubricant along the axis from the sealing side to the other side. When the shaft moves, a low pressure gas is supplied, at which pressure deflects the suture in the ring, where no frictional forces are connected, no power loss or heat is generated, and no liquid moves to the suture by centrifugal force.

The present invention is able to prevent oil dispersed around a spindle from contaminating a processed object or a peripheral device as a lubricant between the spindle and the main shaft is dropped onto the inner surface of a cover and is collected on the outside end of the lower part of the cover even though the lubricant is dispersed to the surroundings with the rotation of the spindle since the cover always covers the periphery of the spindle and the boundary part with the main shaft of supporting the spindle, and oil is discharged to the outside by installing an intake nozzle of a vacuum intake tube in the hole for removing oil.

The working spindle (11) according to the invention is provided with a compressed air-supported inspection of the flat contact area for the tool holder (15). The compressed air is transferred to a transfer gap via a seal assembly (40) that is non-contacting in the resting state. The seals (41, 42) thereof are only positioned, by their respective sealing lips (44), on the spindle part (18) or on the chuck (16) when pressure is applied. During the operation of the working spindle (11), i.e. when the spindle part (18) rotates, the seal assembly (40) is non-contacting and therefore frictionless. In this way, wear and heat generation on the working spindle (11) are avoided. In order to inspect the seal, a very precise monitoring of the flat contact area can be carried out. The leakage rate of the seal assembly (40) can be orders of magnitude lower than leakage rates occurring with tool holders (15) that do not sit flat on the contact surfaces (28, 29, 30). The invention provides a very cost-effective option for inspecting the flat contact area, which also assumes the function of blowing away shavings. The invention can be retrofitted to existing working spindles, and functions in a quick, precise and reliable manner. It is not necessary to interfere in the internal structure of the working spindle.

A tool holder plate (51) is fixed to a shaft end part (413) of a hollow motor shaft (41) of a brushless DC servo motor (1), and a cutting tool is mounted in a tool mounting hole (51a) formed in the tool holder plate (51) and a work is cut-processed by this cutting tool. In order to prevent intrusion of a cutting processing oil containing cutting powder into the inside of the motor from between the shaft end part (411) of the hollow motor shaft (41) and an end plate portion (22) of a motor housing (2), a labyrinth seal (55) including a double circular groove (553, 555) having a fine width extended in the axis direction (1a) is formed between a metal plate (53), the tool holder plate (51), and the shaft end part (411). The other shaft end part (414) is also formed with a labyrinth seal (56) of the same structure. Due to this structure, intrusion of the cutting processing oil into the inside of the motor can be prevented, which can prevent trouble such as early destruction of oil seals (48, 49) by attachment of the cutting powder contained in the cutting processing oil to the oil seals (48, 49).

High speed hydrostatic spindle

An integrated spindle and motor unit includes a housing containing both the spindle shaft and motor with hydrostatic bearings around the front and rear of the spindle shaft. The hydrostatic bearings utilize high pressure oil, preferably in the range of 1,200-1,500 psi and provide good load bearing capacity and increased stiffness for improved cutting accuracy when cutting within the full range of cutting speeds. The present spindle unit is designed to be run at high speeds. The front and rear hydrostatic bearing pads are closely axially spaced along the spindle shaft so that the dynamic stiffness of the spindle is increased to avoid resonant vibrations even at high speed operation thereof. The spindle unit incorporates a sealing system utilizing a series of non-contacting seals including a labyrinth seal and aerostatic floating ring seals which keeps bearing oil in the spindle. The aerostatic ring seals have air restrictor openings therein to create an aerostatic air film that also keeps the rings concentric with the spindle shaft even though the spindle shaft is tilted in a nutator. A permanent magnet (PM) motor is integrated with the spindle with the rotor of the motor on the spindle shaft carrying the permanent magnets rotating within the stator of the motor which is attached in the spindle housing. The PM motor herein can provide high levels of power, e.g., at least 100 hp at the tool head, even in the short span provided by the short spindle shaft. At high speeds the bearing fluid may be pumped by viscous pumping from the radial bearing pockets. To counter such viscous pumping, small low pressure pockets are provided with low pressure oil to fill the high pressure pockets with oil.
