Beat or lift valves. - To enable a locomotive engine to run without steam. the distribution is effected by lift valves A, B the cross-sectional area of the stems of which is such that the pressure of steam in the chest J forces the valves into operative relationship with the gear. When steam is cut off, the valves are forced open aaginst stops N by springs M to put the cylinder ends into communication.
