Wrap around can carrier carton with central retaining member

A wrap around carton for chimed cans is characterized by a retaining member extending into the carton between adjacent cans, the member having a neck portion extending between the chimes joined to a head having outwardly facing abutments which engage the chimes adjacent the can sides. The abutments are formed by folding extensions of one or both flaps 18, the number of folds being doubled when only one flap is used so that the head extends substantially the whole of the distance between the bodies of the cans immediately inward of the chimes. The head portion may extend the whole length of the wrapper or may be in portions between each pair of cans. A tab 28 is glued to one flap 18 to secure the wrap. Push out portions 32, 34 facilitate handling and infolded sectors at 42, 44 engage the chimes at the can ends to prevent them from falling out of the wrapper.
