As means for retardin the advancing rnove 9,5 9 nient of the paper as it is withdrawn froiii the roll I Tnay make use of a light sheet raetal braking device t, which is detarhable, so th,,it where tlie strer-)gth of the p-q,,.oer requires applica'ui@,n of less fluid paste, said device t which lies over the 100 paper p on the spindle 7n gives the desired -,oressure of said peper on the pasting roller c. 'V Vhen the roll of paper p has been moixrjted iii 'bhe osition shown by t,ae drawl,-igs -%vith a supply opf paste in the box or receptacle a, the ii-ser 105 will place the whole apparatti.9 with '@he side a' near the wall upon which the paper has to be hun g or pasted. He will thei,@ unwind 'L'b.e paper from said roll of paper p by pulling at tlie loose end Tl to cause same to leave the coil 23 a,.-id pa!@s 110 ben eath the roller h over part of the - periphery of the roller c a,-id under the roller h3 -in order that the said u.@er may then take the lobse e-nd of the pape r and fix it against the upper el'id of tlle wall 3 upon which it has to be pasted, while the roll- 115 ers i,-q the recep ael a will ep sa-me s g and in alignment with ts surface in a des red position relotive to the wgll 3 upon Nvhich it has to be fixed, as is shown by Fig. 4. After attaching the paper p3 to the wall 3 at the ll,)o 75,

2 1,074,734 part pl as sho@vn by Fig. 4 the user will then brush posed of the spgced apart parallel arms g', g@@, or otherwise cause the port-ion 3 to be pressed straight and even against the wall 3 with its lower end over the washboard 5 to which it will extend frorn the roller h3 as is shown in broken lines. He will then cut off the length of paper along the upper edge of the washboard 5 so that the recepta@.le a may theti be moved parallel to the wall 3 for the next length of paper to be withdrawn in 10 similar manner, while the user will place the extending leqgth of paper over the border edge of the next sheet and viith the pattern 6 thereon opposite the petern 6a on the preceding sheet as is showiq by Fig. 5, by which arr,.,.ngement all@ 15 other rneasuring processes are avoided. By the arms g' and q2 of the supporting frame g for the rollers h aT-i d h3 being pivoted on the side a' of the receptacle a, although the frarne g and the frame k only rest loosely upon the -,47alls of the receptacle a, the paper p is more readily withdrawn from its roll @,vitl-iout in any way raising any of the rollers out of their operating positions. Whe'n the apparatus described is desired to be us,-d for fixing the paper upon the ceiling 4 of a room, as shown by Fia. 6, the receptacle a carrying its several devic '@s niay be then supported by any convenient means such as the upper Dart of a step-ladder 7 so that the paper p3 may be 30 wi.thdrawn therefrom over the roller h3 as is shown by said F-1g. 6. It may then be carried across the room as shown in broken lines, Fig. 6, during which carryil-ig, another person standing o-.i the ladder will keep the poper clear of the 35 coil of paper 2i, until the outer extending end pl oL the paper is attached and the other portion is also pressed against the ceiling 4 up to the point, 8, from,%,hich it may then be carried by the I persoii supporting that part of the paper until it 4,0 is made to cover the ceiling 4 up to the point where said ceililig 4 riieets the vertical walls 3, at which part it may be cut away for the operating to be repeated. As a modification of the devices shown by Figs. 45 1 and 2, iri.stead of makir)-g use of the rollers h and h3 I may make use of a shield or cover s which will overhang the roller c, vjhile its edges SI and S2 are curved as shown by Fig. 3 to act as fixed guides for the paper p2 as it extends from the 50 roll P. It riay be observed that by having the arms g' and g2 pivoted in the position shown by the drawings so that said arms inay be raised to carry with them the rollers 7L and 7L3, a roll of paper p 55 may be rcadily inounted in position upon the ari-,ls 7c' and k2 of the franie k, as is shown in broken lines Fig. 1, after which the arms g and g' n,iay be theii turned dowli -into position shown in full 1-ii-ies F'4g. 1 whei:e the pctper @ijill b., then placed 60 in contact w-ith tlie roller c Nvith tlle outer end pl free to be laid hold of by tl-ae user to4 facilitate its i,vi-thdra-@,ia,l as is horeinbeforedescribed. The distingtiishing chq@racteristics of my iniproved app'aratus are s'ated as follows: 65 The paste receplacle has re-@r and front side wlills, th-, regr v@a.11 a' bein., adp@pt@,d to bc-ar o-n a washboard 5 as shown by Fl.-ure 4, and thus position the appa, ratus for the operation of applying the drawn-oit coated paper to a wall 3, as de70 scribed. The side vvalls are conliected by transverse end walls. The apparatus comprises a swingirig carrier for '@-he paper roll p and for the means for guiding 75 paper ,%cross a portio@n of the paste roll c. Said carrier includes an angular inner member comhinged to the fixed bearings f fl, at the rear portion of the recei)tacle, and a cross bar g connecting said grms at their swinging ends. The carrier includes also an angular outer 80 niember composed of the spaced apart parallel arms k' k2 uiaited to the swingiiig end portiois of the arms of the inner riiember, and projecti-ng forward therefrom, and a cross bar k - connecting the outer extremities of said arms, and - constitut- 85 ing a handle whereby the eiitire carrier may be raised and lowered. The inner member of the carrier is formed to rest, when lowered, on the front side member and the transverse end members of the receptacle, so that the carrier is ade- 190 quately supported. The paper guiding means may include either the rolls h h3 or the shield s having the curved portions sl S2. The rear element of said meaiis, viz, the roll h3 or the curved shield portion S2, C, 5 is spaced from the rear side wall a' of the receptacle, so that the coated paper may be drawn outwardly from the guiding means and applied, as already described, to, the wall or the ceiling of a room. 100 The cross bars g and k impart desi@,,able strength and rigidity to the carrier members so that they ir-ay be made of relatively thin metal strips, and do not objectionably increase the weight of the portable apparatus. 165 The inclined portions of the arms k' k2 of the outer carrier iner-riber exte-Tid across and bear on the cross bar g of the inner carrier member, so that the weight of the paper roll p is supported by said cross bar, and prevented from buckling 11,@) the carrier. Such being the nature and object of my said invel'ition, what I clai-Tn is:- 1. A portable apparatus for the purpose stated, comprising a paste receptacle having rear and T, front side walls and transverse end walls, a P,@iste roll journalled in the receptacle, a swinging carrier including an angular inner member composed of spaced apart parallel arms hinged to the rear portion of the receptacle and a cross bar conriecting the swinging extremities iDf said arms, and an angular outer member composed of spaced apart parallel arms fixed to the outer extremities of the arms of the inner member and projecting forward therefrom, and a cross bar connecting the outer extremities of said arms and constituting a handle whereby the carrier may be raised and lowered, said inner member being formed to rest, when lowered, on the forward side wall and the transverse end walls of the receptacle, a spindle engaged with the arms of the outer member and adapted to support a roll of wall paper, and guiding means supported by the arms of the inner carrier member and arranged to guide paper across and in contact with the upper portion of the paste roll, said guiding means being spaced frorn the rear side wall of the receptacle so@ that coated paper may be drawn outwardly from the guiding means, and applied as described to a roorn wall or a ceiling, the cross bars of the cari, ier mernbers imparting rigidity to the carrier -4(r 2. A portable apparatus as specified by claim 1, the arms of the outer carrier mernber having iliclined portions extending across and bearing on the cross bar of the inner member, so that the weight of a roll on the outer carrier member is stipported by said cross bar, and buckling of the c,,trrier by the @veigb-t of said roll is prevented.
