A cigarette wrapper includes transversely extending banded regions applied by a printing technique, such as gravure printing. The banded regions may be applied in a one or more application of a printing composition that may be an aqueous starch solution also containing an anti-wrinkling agent such as propylene glycol, and calcium carbonate. The pattern of banded regions may be bands or stripes and the like along and/or around the tobacco rod. The banded regions may be solid or contain any number of cross-web and/or longitudinal discontinuities. The pattern may be configured so that when a smoking article is placed on a substrate, at least two longitudinal locations along the length of the tobacco rod have film-forming compound located only on sides of the smoking article not in contact with the substrate. 1. A process of making wrapper paper for a smoking article comprising the steps of:supplying a base web;preparing a printing composition;applying the printing composition to the base web with alternating first and second pattern elements by printing;forming the first pattern element with a predetermined application of the printing composition; andforming the second pattern element with a different predetermined application of the printing composition.2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the printing composition is a cellulosic composition.3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the printing composition is a solvent-based composition.4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the printing composition is an a starch solution.5. The method includes the steps of heating a gas from a first temperature to a second temperature; providing the gas to a first inlet of a nozzle; providing a polymer in a liquid state at a third temperature; providing the polymer to a second inlet of the nozzle; and spraying the polymer onto the cylindrical paperboard container using the nozzle; wherein the second temperature is greater than the third temperature; and the second temperature and third temperature are such that the gas maintains the polymer in the liquid state at least until the polymer comes into contact with the cylindrical paperboard container. A system for applying a coating to a plurality of cylindrical paperboard containers and a container for a consumer product are also provided.
