Provided are exhaust systems and components suitable for use in conjunction with gasoline engines to treat gaseous emissions such as hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxides. Layered three-way conversion (TWC) catalysts comprise an outer layer whose rhodium is supported by an oxygen storage component, such as a ceria-zirconia composite, and the outer layer is substantially free from alumina as a support. The rhodium-containing layer can be free of all other precious metals, such as platinum and palladium. A lower palladium layer is provided where the palladium is supported by a refractory metal oxide. The lower palladium layer can be free of rhodium and platinum and can contain an oxygen storage component that is the same or different from that in the rhodium-containing layer. Methods of making and using these catalysts are also provided.

A four-way conversion catalyst for the treatment of an exhaust gas stream of a gasoline engine, the catalyst comprising a porous wall flow filter substrate comprising an inlet end, an outlet end, a substrate axial length extending between the inlet end and the outlet end, and a plurality of passages defined by porous internal walls of the porous wall flow filter substrate, wherein the plurality of passages comprise inlet passages having an open inlet end and a closed outlet end, and outlet passages having a closed inlet end and an open outlet end; wherein in the pores of the porous internal walls and on the surface of the porous internal walls, which surface defines the interface between the porous internal walls and the passages, the catalyst comprises a three-way conversion catalytic coating comprising an oxygen storage compound and a platinum group metal supported on a refractory metal oxide; wherein in the pores of the porous internal walls, the three-way conversion catalytic coating is present as in-wall-coating and on the surface of the porous internal walls, the three-way conversion catalytic coating is present as on-wall-coating; wherein in addition to said three-way conversion catalytic coating, the catalyst comprises no further coating in the pores of the porous internal walls and no further coating on the surface of the porous internal walls.

The present disclosure relates to processes for formation of a molecular sieve, particularly a metal-promoted molecular sieve, and more particularly an Iron(III) exchanged zeolite. Preferably, the zeolite is of the chabazite form or similar structure. The processes can include combining a zeolite with Iron(III) cations in an aqueous medium. The process can be carried out at a pH of less than about 7, and a buffering material can be used with the aqueous medium. The processes beneficially result in Iron exchange that can approach 100% along with removal of cations (such as sodium, NH4, and H) from the zeolite. An Iron(III)-exchanged zeolite prepared according to the disclosed processes can include about 2,000 ppm or less of cation and about 1% by weight or greater of Iron(III). The disclosure also provides catalysts (e.g., SCR catalysts) and exhaust treatment systems including the Iron(III)-exchanged zeolite.

There is disclosed a process for the aqueous solution or emulsion polymerization of acrylamide monomer to produce homopolymers of very high molecular weight using mixtures of water and monomer at least one of which can be contaminated with small amounts of polymerization inhibiting components. In the process, a minimum effective amount of a redox catalyst is utilized in order to obtain very high molecular weight by incrementally adding one member of a redox pair to a solution of the monomer containing a second redox pair number. The process can be initiated at ambient temperatures and pressures, and polymerization is effected without providing additional heat to the reaction mass. Utilizing monomer concentrations of about 10 to about 50 percent by weight, molecular weights of about 1,000,000 to 10,000,000 can be obtained.

Polymerization process for preparation of acrylamide homopolymers with redox catalyst

There is disclosed a process for the aqueous polymerization of acrylamide to produce polymers of high molecular weight utilizing mixtures of water and monomer, at least one of which can be contaminated with small amounts of polymerization inhibiting components. In the process of the invention, a minimum amount of a redox pair catalyst is utilized in order to obtain the desired high molecular weight polymer. The minimum amount of catalyst is automatically provided to the polymerization mixture by adding a first member of a redox pair to the polymerization mixture and intimately combining a second member of the redox pair catalyst with an organic polymer capable of forming a colloidal dispersion in an aqueous medium and adding this intimate mixture to the mixture of water, acrylamide monomer, and a first member of the redox pair catalyst. The process disclosed provides for the slow release of one member of the redox pair catalyst from said intimate mixture into an aqueous solution or emulsion polymerization medium. As polymerization proceeds, an additional amount of catalyst is made available by the slow recess of one member of the redox pair into the aqueous polymerization medium. The polymerization process can be initiated and maintained at ambient temperatures and pressures. Thus polymerization is effected without providing additional heat or pressure to the reaction mass. Molecular weights of about 1 million to 10 million can be obtained where monomer concentrations are held between about 10 to about 50 percent by weight of the polymerization mixture.
