In the production of maleic anhydride from benzene employing a molybdenum-vanadium-oxygen oxidation catalyst, addition of a volatilizable compound of a phosphorus halide or an organo phosphorus compound is added to the catalyst to deactivate a portion of the catalyst whereby progressive nonselectivity of a portion of the catalyst resulting in a decrease in anhydride yield is overcome and high yields of anhydride are maintained.

IMPROVED PARTIAL OXIDATION CATALYST An improvement in the oxidation catalyst used for the partial oxidation of n-butane and containing vanadium and phosphorus mixed oxides which comprises adding a zinc compound in an amount of from about 0.15 to 0.001/1 Zn/V to the catalyst during the digestion of the reduced vanadium component by concentrated phosphoric acid. The addition of zinc produces a catalyst which is more easily activated and which is very stable to heat upset of the reaction system. Small amounts of lithium and silicon compounds also have additional desirable catalytic effects without dimunition of the zinc compound benefit.

IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF 2-CHLOROBUTADIENE-1,3 FROM 3,4-DICHLOROBUTENE-1 A process is described whereby 2-chlorobutadiene-1,3 is produced from 3, 4-dichlorobutene-1 in a two-phase reaction system wherein the reaction predominantly occurs in the organic phase and the production of undesirable by-products, particularly 1-chlorobutadiene-1,3 and acetaldehyde, is suppressed. The practice of the process results in a brine effluent from the reactor containing small amounts of organic materials resulting in a waste product which is less polluting and more easily cleaned. The organic phase is selected from primary and secondary alcohols, alkoxyethanols and mixtures thereof, preferably alkoxyethanols wherein the alkyl group has two or more carbon atoms.
