A tracked, self-propelled machine for laying a film and depositing ballast on it to cover a landfill or other ground area. The machine (20) has a ballast box (28) with a reciprocating slat floor (38) and an end gate (34) for holding the ballast (50). A ballast distribution module (58) at the back of the ballast box has a pair of conveyors (68, 70) separated by a gap (72). A roll of film (96) is held by a film roll support mechanism (94) at the back of the machine for unwinding onto the ground surface as the machine moves forward. Ballast is moved to the back of the box by the reciprocating slat floor and is released from an opening (52) under the end gate onto the conveyors and into the gap for deposition onto the laid film.

A machine () for laying a film () on a ground surface such as a landfill has a pair of opposed, support arms () each having a respective film roll support mechanism (). In some embodiments the support arms are pivotable. Each film roll support mechanism () has a moveable arm () with a film roll support bracket (), and a hydraulic system () controllable by an operator of the machine for retracting and extending the moveable arm (). The machine has means () for holding the roll () of film between the brackets () for unwinding the film onto the ground. The machine may include a film cutter assembly () for cutting the laid film. The machine permits the controlled laying of the film and the operator adjustment of the position of the roll of film in response to windy conditions, obstacles and sloping ground. 1. A machine for laying a film on a ground surface and depositing an anchoring material on the film , comprising:(a) a container for holding the anchoring material;(b) means for releasing the anchoring material from the container;(c) means for moving the machine over the ground surface;(d) a pair of support arms each having a respective film roll support mechanism operatively connected thereto, the support arms being movable between an operating position in which the respective film roll support mechanism is extended outward from the machine at a respective opposed side thereof, and a retracted position in which the respective film roll support mechanism is adjacent to the respective opposed side of the machine; (i) a movable arm;', '(ii) a film roll support bracket operatively connected to the movable arm; and', '(iii) a hydraulic system controllable by an operator of the machine for retracting and extending the movable arm to fix the film roll support bracket in a selected position above the ground surface; and, '(e) the two film roll support mechanisms each comprising(f) means for holding the roll of film between the two roll support brackets for unwinding of the ...

Degradable/compostable concentrates, process for making degradable/compostable packaging materials and the products thereof

The present invention is directed to an additive degradable/compostable package, the combination of a metal carboxylate and an aliphatic poly hydroxy-carboxyl acids, which is added to polyolefin resins in the production of specific products. The addition of the additive degradable/compostable package produces a packaging product which is degradable/compostable. The additive package may include calcium oxide (CaO) to make the modified polyolefin resin more processable. Further, stabilizers or oxidizers may be added to the additive package. The additive package is specifically modified or tailored to the application of the packaging product, e.g. trash bag, compost bag, merchant bag, diaper liner, wrapping film, agricultural film, landfill cover or foamed planks. The present invention further includes the method or process of producing the degradable/compostable concentrates and the improvement of the process of making the degradable/compostable packaging products by the addition of calcium oxide (CaO).

The present invention is directed to melt blown polyolefin film which is produced cheaply by melt blowing polyolefin resins which contain 1 to 45 wt% fillers selected from the fillers including an inorganic carbonate, synthetic carbonates, nepheline syenite, talc, magnesium hydroxide, aluminum trihydrate, diatomaceous earth, mica, natural or synthetic silicas and calcined clays or mixtures thereof, having a particle size less than 150 mesh. A further aspect of the present invention is directed to polyolefin resins, especially polyethylene, which are chemically degradable by the incorporation of the combination of the above group of fillers and a metal carboxylate. The metal carboxylates of the present invention are inclusive of a large number of metals, such as cerium, cobalt, iron, magnesium and manganese.

A degradable disposable diaper (10) includes one or more sheets made of polyolefin with the polyolefin including a prodegradant causing the sheet to degrade. The prodegradant includes a metal compound such as a metal selected from the group consisting of cobalt, cerium, and iron. The preferred metal compound is a metal carboxylate. The polyolefin is preferably polyethylene or polypropylene. A secondary polyolefin may be used to aid the incorporation of the prodegradant into the primary polyolefin. The filler preferably has a particle size less than 150 mesh and is free of water. The filler is preferably calcium carbonate having a 1 to 10 micron particle size. The sheet (12) contains between about 0.001 and about 30 weight % prodegradant and most preferably between about 0.01 and about 3 weight % prodegradant. The sheet also includes up to about 15 weight % filler. The diaper also includes a degradable absorbent core (18).

Method and apparatus for covering landfill

The method and apparatus is used for covering the exposed workface of a landfill with a film. The apparatus includes a compactor rotatably mounted on a frame which is hitched to a tractor. A film and ballast deployer is mounted on the end of the frame for deploying the film onto the landfill and for deploying the ballast onto the film. The compactor includes a roller which compacts the waste and serves as a wheel for the frame. Hydraulics are provided to raise and lower the deployer. In operation, the assembly is pulled by the tractor causing the compactor to compact the waste just prior to the deployer laying the film on the workface and the ballast being deposited onto the film. Additionally, the apparatus is capable of casing the overlapping layers of laid film to adhere to the ballast in between thereby forming a seal between the adjoining layers.
