A system for introducing an elongated spinal rod comprising a bone fastener having a head (24), the head including a top end (12), a bottom end (13), and a pair of side walls (26, 28) connected at the bottom end defining an elongated U-shaped channel (22) having a first longitudinal axis (23) and a top opening (14) located at the top end. The top opening and the channel further define a passageway (11) configured for receiving the spinal rod (15) and each side wall further defining a first end face (30, 32) and a second end face (34, 36), the second end face opposite the first end face. A bone engaging element (21) extends from the bottom end of the head for anchoring the bone fastener to the bone. The system further comprises a tool (50) for introducing the rod into the U-shaped channel.

A pair of forceps including first and second elongated members pivotally connected together. A handle and a head are defined at opposing ends of the first and second elongated members. In one preferred embodiment, a threaded cannula receiving chamber is disposed in the head, and the elongated members are separable via manipulation of the first and second elongated members with respect to each other.

A cannulated fastener system is provided for orthopedic applications that include attaching bone plates to bone. The bone fastener has a cannulation with an inner shape. One or more screwdrivers is provided with a shaft having a shape that matches the cannulation of the fastener to rotationally fix the fastener to the screwdriver. In addition, the screwdrivers have a cutting blade that begins the drilling of a hole for the bone fastener. The screwdrivers may either be for use with a single fastener or have multiple fasteners loaded within a retaining sleeve for automatic or controlled dispensing.

A spring-loaded surgical awl is provided for orthopedic applications that include creating or enlarging holes in bone. The awl has an awl shaft with a cutting tip within a sleeve, with a spring disposed between the awl shaft and sleeve to return the cutting tip of the awl tip to a position within the sleeve after the cutting tip of the awl shaft contacts the bone. The outer sleeve has an end that preferably engages a bone plate and the travel of the awl tip is limited by a shoulder within the outer sleeve.

A fixation system includes a plate comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, a central longitudinal axis, at least one fixation hole extending between the top and bottom surfaces and comprising an undercut therein, and at least one passage intersecting one of the undercuts. At least one resilient clip is disposed in a portion of the undercut, with the clip having a pair of generally parallel sides and an end tab. At least one fastener is provided and comprises a head and a threaded shaft, with the head comprising a perimetral groove extending around at least a portion thereof and an instrument receiving portion. The clip is configured and dimensioned to seat in the undercut with the end tab extending within the passage, and the fastener is configured and dimensioned to be received in the fixation hole and securable therein when the clip abuts the perimetral groove of the head.
