A radiofrequency identification (RFID) multiplexer, which may be in a network, interprets an RF signal from an RFED reader as RFE) tag interrogation data. A single cable directs an RF signal from the RFID reader and RF control signals and/or RF power through the multiplexer. An RF sampler may be coupled to the cable; and an RF detector detects the RF signal from the cable via the RF sampler. A data decoder decodes and interprets the RF signal as the RFID tag interrogation data and forwards the RFID tag interrogation data to a control logic circuit as a MUX channel-change command. The logic circuit and decoder may be combined in a microcontroller, and an RF backscatter modulator coupled to the cable enables reverse communication with the RFID reader to determine whether another RFID multiplexer is coupled to the RFID multiplexer.

A surveillance marker has a semiconductor connected between arms of a dipole antenna, one arm being of non-ferrous conductive material and the other of high permeability low coercivity material such as permalloy. Higher coercivity magnetizable pieces are disposed adjacent the low coercivity arm, and all is sandwiched between paper or other insulating layers. The marker is detected by a combination of RF field and low frequency magnetic field generating and receiving units that energize a master alarm only when both units simultaneously detect the marker signals. Magnetizing the higher coercivity pieces suppresses a signal that would otherwise be reradiated by the marker from the high permeability arm thereby rendering the marker undetectable.

A checkout system for a retail store is disclosed which comprises a bar code reader (10) and an anti-theft tag deactivator (14). The bar code reader produces a signal upon the bar code on an article being read successfully by the reader. This signal is used to enable the deactivator for a predetermined period of time whereafter the deactivator is disabled until the next successful bar code read. This minimises the prospects of a cashier being able to deactivate the anti-theft tag on an article without having read the bar code on the article and hence entered the sale. The system can also include a microswitch for detecting closing and opening of the cash drawer. If the drawer is left open, but the bar codes on articles are read by the bar code reader, this can indicate the possibility of goods being fraudulently removed from the store.

In a receiving arrangement (300), respective signals received from two adjacent co-planar antenna loops (302, 304) are respectively phase-shifted by +45° and -45° and the resulting phase-shifted signals are summed. A far-field canceling transmitting antenna arrangement includes four loops (66', 78, 68, 70) operated at phases of 0°, 90°, 180° and 270° respectively. All four loops may be co-planar, with any bucking vertical segments being horizontally displaced from each other. Alternatively, the 0° and 180° loops may also be arranged in a common plane that is close to and parallel with another plane in which the 90° and 270° loops are arranged.

The support member comprises a two-layer plastic body, one layer of which defines the first and second recesses. The two-layer plastic body is preferably a thermoformed molded body.

An electronic key (1) capable of reinitializing or resetting a security disabled electronic article surveillance (EAS) device is provided. The electronic key (1) can be a secure, portable, and battery (4) powered for initializing a secured EAS system's security protocol to factory default state, or to another preselected state. The key (1) has its own set of security protocols to prevent unauthorized use and can easily be reprogrammed for a wide variety of other functions including, but not limited to, firmware upgrading, diagnostic testing, and the like. The key (1) can be connected to the programming port of an EAS device and perform a preset reprogramming operation, resetting activated security features. The key (1) could be purchased for customer use, and would be secured by preselecting the total number of uses, such as one use. The one-time use would begin once the key (1) is activated. Activation of the key (1) is also uniquely controlled to prevent its misuse. In one embodiment, the electronic key (1) must detect the interrogation field of a properly functioning EAS exit system prior to becoming enabled. The allowed usage can be limited by time, the number of units reprogrammed, or a combination of both. Once the key (1) has been activated for its pre-selected number of uses and shuts off, only qualified service personnel can reset the electronic key function for further uses.

The flux concentrators have magnetic anisotropies oriented transversely relative to the length of the wires to aid in coupling the wires for simultaneous switching.

An antenna system for an electronic article surveillance system, comprising: a first, tunable transmitting loop (12); a second, tunable transmitting loop (14), the first and second transmitting loops being arranged for first and second modes of operation, the transmitting loops being field-coupled to one another such that tuning the antenna system for one of the modes of operation detunes the antenna system for the other mode of operation; a tunable compensation coil (16) field-coupled to each of the first and second transmitting loops, the tunable compensation coil enabling the antenna system to be tuned for operation in one of the modes at a first resonant frequency, and despite the detuning, enabling the antenna system to be tuned for operation in the other of the modes at a second frequency independently of the tuning for the first mode of operation. The compensation loop (16) encircles the first and second transmitting loops (12, 14).
