A method of manufacturing products comprising an outer casing of a first material ( 12 ) and containing at least one chamber ( 18 ) filled with a second material ( 14 ) comprises extruding the first material through a die ( 10 ) to form an extrudate body ( 16 ) and delivering the second material through at least one fluid outlet ( 22 ) in the die to form the least one filled chamber. The extrusion process is varied periodically and momentarily to produce sections ( 30 ) of extrudate body having no filled chamber. In one embodiment, the flow of the second material ( 14 ) is periodically reduced to form the unfilled sections. The flow of the second material ( 14 ) may be reduced by increasing the volume of a supply path for the second material upstream from the die ( 10 ). Apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed. The method and apparatus are particularly adapted for producing food, and especially confectionery, products.

An improved system and method to produce a bread product is disclosed. Bread products that produced with the system and method are also disclosed. The bread products are intended for commercial manufacture with high volume and efficiency. The system and method produce bread products from multiple dough components; one dough component provides an interior core; another dough product provides an exterior layer. When the bread product is baked, a multi-component bread product is formed where the crumb is provided by the dough component of the interior core and the crust is provided by exterior surface of the dough component of the exterior layer. Any of a wide variety of types and forms and shapes and sizes and etc. of bread products may be produced. The system and method may be performed using any of a wide variety of production techniques. Visually distinct, flaked Ready-to-Eat (“R-T-E”) cereal products with varied texture and thickness are produced by forming a cereal dough and forcing the same through an extrusion die assembly including various spaced openings which establish a plurality of dough streams which are merged prior to reaching a die outlet. Directly at the die outlet, a resulting dough extrudate is sliced by a cutter unit to form dough discs which are then dried and cooled, during which the discs curl and form cereal flakes having varying textures defined, at least in part, by distinct sets of surface bumps. The number and configuration of the bumps can be altered by changing the number, shape and/or position of the various spaced openings of the die assembly, while the thickesses of the resulting cereal flakes can be varied by just altering an operational speed of the cutter unit. 1. A cereal flake comprising a curled flake body having a plurality of spaced , interconnected surface bumps , wherein the curled flake body includes a lower body portion , side portions and a peripheral edge portion , wherein the plurality of spaced bumps include a first set of bumps in the lower body portion and a second set of bumps in the side portions , with the first set of bumps being shaped different from the first set of bumps.2.
