An insole 30 (Fig. 1, not shown) is positioned on a last 26 by applying force to the periphery of the insole at three selected points at least to move the insole into coincidence with the last, and combined with the last while the force is maintained. The last is supported on toe and heel rests 32, 34 which are individually adjustable heightwise and lengthwise of the last, a toe guide finger 62 facilitating initial loading, and the insole, previously taped with a double-faced pressure sensitive tape, is placed on the last. When the machine is set in operation back guide assemblies 42, 44 move from a remote position to an aligning position, and flat, spring- pressed swivel plates 74, 76, adjustably mounted on arms 78, 80, bear against the heel portion of the last, in longitudinal relation thereto, deflecting any overlapping portions of the insole.
