A footwear last ( 1 ) comprising a hind foot section and a forefoot section joined by a midfoot section. The forefoot section is defined by a three reference points which define a reference point circumference ( 9, FIGS. 1 and 2 ). The hind foot section is equivalent to a predetermined shoe ( 20 ) size ( 37 ) while the forefoot section is equivalent to a shoe ( 20 ) size ( 37 ) between 2 and 3 sizes larger than said predetermined shoe ( 20 ) size ( 37 ) using the Paris point system. An article of footwear made using said last ( 1 ) comprises an upper ( 22 ), a midsole ( 30, FIG. 6 ) and an outer sole ( 40 ). The upper ( 22 ) has an outer layer ( 21 ) and an inner layer, which inner layer comprises an elastic panel ( 25 ) arranged to cover the first and/or fifth metatarsophalangeal joint of a user. The main toe wiper plates operate to wipe in the toe and forepart portions of the upper. The insole cementing plate has heelward extensions hinged thereto which are yieldably urged upward by springs. Cement is fed to the extensions via passageways in their connective pivot pins.

Abstract Machine for lasting heel seat portions of shoes In a tack seat lasting machine the wiper plates (90) first effect an "advancing + inwiping" movement and thereafter an "inwiping only" movement, while a central wiping member (76), about which the wiper plates pivot, advances only. To achieve this motion, the member (76) is supported by an arcuate projection (78) which is accommodated in grooves (83) formed in the wiper carriers (88), the center of curvature of the projection and grooves coinciding with the axis of the wiper plates. Thus, the central wiping member is always brought to the same "back tack" position (but the shoe can be adjustably positioned relative thereto by varying the fore-and-aft position of the heel band (20)). The nail pattern is adjustable, without affecting the back tack position, by limiting the stroke of the cylinder controlling the operation of the wiper assembly.

[Published under Section 91 of the Act.] [Addition to 3586/09.] Lasting.-Relates to the method of lasting described in Specification 18,848/07. The " outer sewing " with which the edges of the upper is treated prior to lasting is replaced, according to one form, by a series of " dog " pincers " distributed around the upper. According to another arrangement, this sewing is retained, and the lasting-cable is attached to the sewing by a series of hooks. The " dog " pincers " are shown in Fig. 38, and comprise a clamp carrying a hook 171 with which the lasting-cable is engaged. Fig. 39 shows the double hook used in the alternative method. The last-support is modified as follows. Each vertically-movable member 26 carries a plate 155, in which slide a number of members 157, the outer ends of which are squared to form " pushers "; in another arrangement, these ends carry rollers 169 to guide the lasting-cable along the contour of the last. Each of the pushers is pressed towards the last by a spring, encirling a rod 161 projecting from the plate 155, and arranged between this plate and a lug on the underside of the " pusher " 157. A lever 164, pivoted to the plate 155, and, as described, pulled downwards by a spring, carries a number of blades 166, which engage racks on the upper faces of the " pushers " to hold them in position. By means of a screw and hand-wheel 31, the plate 155 and its attached parts may be urged towards the last. The metallic lasting- cable 52 is strained by means of a screw and hand-wheel 168 supported by a bracket 167 carried by the members 26. In place of the plate 155 and its associated parts, the members 26 may each carry two rollers, around which the lasting cable is passed.

Pulling-over. - In a pulling-over machine of the kind described in Specification 23021/06, the grippers at the toe-end are supplemented by pincers acting on the upper margin at points between the broadest part of the ball and the narrow part of the joint, these pincers being adjustable angularly to the longitudinal axis of the last. The toe and side pincers 28, 24, 23 at the toe end, described in the prior Specification, are supplemented by pincers 1 arranged to pull-over the upper at the rear of the ball. Each pair of pincers is mounted on a ball joint 6 secured to a slide 7 normally pressed outwards by a spring 8 but adapted to be automatically pressed inwards, for the overdraw, by a head 21 on a lever 20 operated by a cam 19. The slide 7 carries a second ball 9 engaging an arm of a hand-lever 2, by which the grippers may be closed on the upper and pulled downwardly. To adjust the pincers, to and from the last, the slide 7 has rack teeth gearing with a pinion 10 on the shaft of which is a hand-wheel 15<a>. The pincer-carrying frame 11 is further adjustable about a vertical axis 12, by a hand-wheel 15, this axis being itself adjustable about a vertical axis 33, carried by a vertically-adjustable slide 14. Driver bars 27 are automatically operated as usual to drive the fastening tacks.

The upper and the sole, assembled on the last, are brought up to a work-support F, which presses the upper into the angle between the sole a and the last c. A welt strip d is fed into position over the out-turned edge of the upper through a guide-passage in the work-support. The upper is gripped and pulled by grippers G, G', and while the upper is held under tension, an awl C moves to penetrate the welt, the upper, and the margin of the sole. The work, grippers, and awl are then moved by the travel of a feed-slide H into a position for the work to be operated upon by the stitching-mechanism. A presser L clamps the work to the work-support until the feed slide is operated; but the clamping pressure may be released in part or altogether during the pulling operation. After the work has been fed by the slide, the presser L descends again, and holds the work until the stitch is made, the grippers, awl, and feed slide returning to their original positions. The upper may be released from the grippers before the completion of the feed movement. The lower jaw G<1> of the grippers is formed on a bar G<2> supported at one end by a vertical link G<3> pivoted at its lower end to the feed-slide H. The bar G<2> and the link G<3> are connected by pivoted ears G<30> provided with a stem rotatable in a bore in the link. The lasting-devices are the same on both sides of the last, and comprise a pincer 13, Fig. 2, carried by spring-controlled pincer-bars, which are arranged so that by their relative movement they first cause a dovetail 20 to close the pincer jaws and then move together to effect the up-draw, a tacking-device 74, which is furnished with a wiper face to press the stretched upper down over the insole, and a guide-roller 25, which engages the upper and causes the pincers and the tacking-device to swing bodily in and out to follow the contour of the last. In one aspect, the present disclosure provides a method. The method may include placing an upper on a last, where the upper includes a lower perimeter edge secured to a lasting element, and where the last includes an opening for receiving the lasting element. The method may further include feeding the lasting element at least partially through an opening of the last and tensioning the lasting element to tighten the upper around the last by pulling the tensioning element at least partially through the opening.
