Feeding webs.-In a cutting-out press for heel lifts and other articles, the material to be cut is fed into position by a reciprocating element adjustably pivoted in a guide of an oscillating actuating-arm, such guide being concentric with the finishing position of the feeding- element so that this position is maintained approximately constant notwithstanding variation in the length of feeding-stroke. Yielding pressers arranged at the sides of the feeding- element serve to hold the material in position during the feed. Preliminary means may be provided for cutting the material into strips and for feeding these strips into position to be engaged by the feeding-means of the cutting-out press. The material to be cut into strips is fed by pairs of rolls 3, 17, Fig. 2, from a table 1 provided with a lateral gauge 2. [Class 31 (i)] A machine for operating upon soles comprises a jack mounted both for bodily movement of translation and for rotary movement, the jack including sole-engaging means against which a sole may be clamped by a rotatable clamping member, a sliding support for the clamping member and means carried by the support to rotate the clamping member to maintain it in register with the soleengaging means regardless of the position of the jack. In the machine shown, a sole is rounded, bevelled, and roughed marginally, and finally trimmed by rotary cutters 142, 144, 172, 174 controlled by a grooved pattern 272 in a similar manner to that described in Specification 440,327. The cutters are carried by vertical shafts 130,168, Fig. 5, mounted in spring-urged slides 134, 176 in a casing 136 and driven from a shaft 118 by gears 122, 140, 162. The slide 176 and shaft 168 are independently vertically adjustable by nuts 192, 196 and screws 190, 198 to alter the relative positions of the cutters 174, 172. The slide 134 is also adjustable. The casing 136 rockable about the shaft 118 is supported by an arm 92, Fig. 1, rockable about a vertical sleeve 48 which is urged by a spring 222, acting through linkage 226, 234, 236, 238 to hold the cutters up to a sole blank 240 clamped on the pattern. The shaft 118 is driven continuously from a motor 24 by a pulley 28, shaft 30, Fig. 9, skew gears 38, 40, shaft 42, skew gears 84, 86, Fig. 1, shaft 88 and other gears. Traversing-cutter type for cutting designs; verticalcutter type for cutting sheet material in direction of feed.-Relates to sole-rounding machines of the type in which a trimming-knife is caused to travel round a pattern by rotating either the pattern or the knife support, and consists in the provision of means independent of the forward movement of the knife or its associated parts for returning the knife to the point from which it started in the rounding operation after it has been carried beyond this point by the driving-mechanism or by the momentum of the parts, after the driving-mechanism has been thrown out of operation. The means for clamping and rotating the work and pattern, and the means for mounting and actuating the knife are the same as those described in Specification 18,954/02, [Class 17, Boots &c.]. The rotary knife-supporting table 8, Fig. 5, is driven from a shaft 20 by a two-speed mechanism which is described in Specification 1070/08, [Class 17, Boots &c.]. The mechanism for returning the knife to a fixed point after each cutting operation consists of a masked ratchet device 114,115, Figs. 4 and 5. The ratchet 114 is formed on the main driving-sleeve 23, which is fully described in the Specification 1070/08, [Class 17, Boots &c.], while the pawl 115 is carried by a lever 116, Fig. 4, and connected up to an eccentric 118 surrounding a sleeve on the rockshaft 37, which is also described in the same Specification. A bladder (36) which is particularly useful for a sole assembly of a shoe is formed of multiple layers of barrier film to provide multiple pressurized layers of cushioning fluid or gas when the bladder is filled. A multiple gas layer bladder enhances cushioning response by relying more on the response characteristics of the gas and reducing the amount of foam and the dependence on foam as a cushioning material. The internal film layers (42,44) provide a truss-like geometry in cross section and act as tensile members to impart a generally smooth surface contour to the bladder. The bladder (36) is constructed to provide complex regionalized cushioning profiles which are coupled to the anatomy of the foot and expected loads at known points. The sidewalls of the bladder can be constructed with an inverted seam construction to eliminate finishing steps in the manufacture of cushioning bladders and alternatively to provide a clean, seamless appearance along the sidewalls. The inverted seam can be formed by attaching the peripheral edges of inner barrier layers (42,44) to the outer barrier layers (38,40) adjacent a weld between inner barrier layers to provide an inside-out inverted seam appearance. The present invention relates to automated cutting of flexible articles. More particularly, the present invention relates to automatic cutting and / or trimming of a flexible article that lacks uniformity, such as a shoe upper. An image of the flexible article having image feature points is picked up, and a pattern having pattern feature points such as a proposed cut path or the like is selected. The image feature points are compared against the distance tolerance associated with the pattern feature points to adjust the proposed cut path so that the proposed cut path satisfies the distance tolerance while providing the crop trimmed to a consistent size and / or shape.

The back seam is formed by attaching a peripheral edge of the inner barrier layer to an outer barrier layer near the weld between the inner barrier layers to provide a back seam appearance. The back seam can also be formed by providing a separate sidewall element attached to the barrier layer of the bladder to provide a seam offset from the center of the sidewall.

The method includes the steps of providing a first polymer film, applying a curable release coating to the polymer film in a pattern that corresponds to the configuration of the inflatable bladder, curing the release coating to the first polymer film, providing a second polymer film with the first polymer film to form a layered element such that the release coating is disposed between the polymer films, positioning the layered element between two plies of material, applying heat and pressure to adhere the polymer films together except in the area where the release coating has been applied to form an inflatable compartment surrounded by a sealed perimeter, and removing the plies of material from the adhered first and second polymer films.

The pieces to be trimmed vertically are placed on a loading plate which can be moved along an upper guide track towards the cutting edge of the band to arrive at a removal position; a lower guide track serves to bring the loading plate back to the placing position. In the latter, magazines containing a supply of stampings are mounted over the loading plate above the different suction fixing positions which are located according to the shapes of the different pieces to be dressed. These magazines allow of the attainment of a certain degree of automation and the risk of accident is eliminated.

Alternatively, each spindle head may be driven by a separate motor, the speed and direction of rotation of one motor differing from those of the other motor. A machine for trimming an insole in position on a last is provided with automatic means for varying the inclination of cut in conformity with the contour of the last, thereby avoiding any space between the insole and the upper &c. in an assembled boot. Specification 24,561/10 is referred to. The invention is shown applied to the trimming of the heel end of an insole and embodied in (1) a hand-operated machine in which the work is rotated against a cutter and (2) a power-driven machine in which the cutter is traversed against the work. (1) Vertical-cutter type for cutting sheet material in direction of feed; bevelling &c. -The last L, Fig. 2, carrying the insole I is clamped between a self-adjusting foot 26 and a support 8 carried on a treadle-raised spindle 6 and provided with last-engaging pins 14, 16. The work is rotated by hand against the action of a spring, to carry its edge past a cutter 31, which is clamped in a block 32, Fig. 3, pivoted at 34 in a holder 36 provided with a stud 44 by which it is mounted loosely in a spring-controlled pivoted carrier 46, adapted to keep the cutter against the work. The stud 44 is so mounted that its axis intersects that of the pivot 50 of the carrier 46. The inclination of the cutter is controlled by the engagement with the last of the top of the block 32 and a lug 40 on this block. The last may be inclined towards its toe end to counteract the effect of a rise of the cutter when passing round the heel end thereby securing the continued use of the same portion of the cutter. A spring 59 bears on the work in advance of the knife, and a guide 37 serves to deflect the severed edge. (2) Traversing-cutter type for cutting designs ; bevelling &c.-The last L, Fig. 4, carrying the insole is placed on a fixed but adjustable support 26* and is pressed rearwardly into engagement with a forked member 114, which, through a slide 112 and spring- controlled lever 108, ...

Condensers in the electronic circuit are normally charged and, in response to signals from the photoelectric sensors, instantaneously discharge into the coil to actuate the plunger, which after cutting the tape is returned to a rest position by a helical spring mounted on the plunger.

A method for forming a plastic support shell of a sole includes the steps of placing a sheet material into a first mold assembly; softening the sheet material; vacuum plastic molding; putting the plastic semi product into a cutting mold assembly; cutting the waste edge; putting into a trimming mold assembly; and trimming with a mechanical arm. The carrying mold and the pressing mold press against the inner and outer surfaces of the plastic semi product, and the restricting edge and the support edge are used to define a cutting line. Therefore, the plastic semi product can be firmly positioned and held tight, and then the mechanical arm can trim the plastic semi product under the guiding of the restricting edge and the support edge, which makes the trimming process easy and precise.

[Also in Division F2] A cutting press comprises a lower platen 12 supporting a conductive cutting pad 13 on which material 14 to be cut and a cutting die 16 are supported, and an upper platen 30 which is supported by a carriage 22 movable transversely of the platen 12 by hydraulically powered means, the platen 30 being movable towards the platen 12 by means including a hydraulic ram mounted on the carriage. The carriage is provided with rollers 24 movable along a pair of rails 20. The platen 30 is supported at the lower end of a vertically slidable cylinder 28 mounted in a cylindrical bearing block 26 supported by the carriage. Mounted on a cover-plate 38 is a hollow pistonrod 40 which carries a piston 42 slidably accommodated in the cylinder 28. The piston-rod 40 and piston 42 have a bore extending therethrough by means of which, through a flexible hydraulic hose 44, a chamber formed in the cylinder 28 below the piston 42 is connected with a source of pressure fluid from a pump 48 driven from an electric motor 50 and flywheel 50a. Springs 34 urge the platen 30 upwardly to its raised position away from the platen 12. For moving the carriage 22, and thus the platen 30, transversely of the platen 12 there is provided a screwthreaded rod 60 driven by a reversible hydraulic motor 68, the rod 60 threadedly engaging a nut 64. Electrical control means are provided to enable the press to be operated in a number of different modes and to this end the control means comprises electrical timer devices for controlling the return stroke of the platen 30 after cutting, the retreating movement of the carriage 22, and the return movement of the carriage. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In power driven machines, such as presses, in which a dog 24 co-operates with a lever 26 for actuating brake and clutch apparatus for starting and stopping the machine, the dog 24 instead of being pivoted to a purely reciprocating point 17 of the connecting rod 16, as hitherto, is pivoted to the connecting rod 16 on a pivot 29 offset from the pivot 17. Thus the brake actuated by the lever 26 will continue to operate even should the machine shaft 12 slightly overrun. Means for preventing actuation of the mechanism should the machine get out of adjustment are provided. In the revolution press shown, the lever 26 actuates a clutch and a band brake in a manner such as described in Specifications 4833/13, [Class 80 (ii)], and 498,469. In the position shown the dog 24 engages the lever 26 and is held against an abutment 38 on the vertically reciprocable cross-head 18 by a spring 36. The dog 24 has a trip plate 34 engaging a trip plate 30 on a bar 32. The latter at one end has a pin-and-slot connection with a link 40 pivoted to a link 50 articulated to the lever 26, and at the other end has a roller 56 slideble in a guideway 54 in a link 48 pivoted to a treadle 96. The left-hand end of the bar 32 is urged upwardly by a spring 58, but upward movement is prevented by an abutment 42 on the bar 32 engaging a pawl 46 pivoted to the link 48. The treadle 96 has a vertical arm 95 connected by a rod 97 passing through a slotted block 98 pivoted to the link 40. In operation the treadle 96 is depressed to move the rod 97 and hence the bar 32 to the left. [Class 17(i)] A machine, for operating on a sole edge attached to a shoe in which the work support moves the sole past the tool support, has means which, when released, allows the tool post to be moved in two directions relative to the sole edge. In the edge-setting machine described, a shoe support 1, Fig. 1, is mounted for vertical and rotary movement at 2, 3. A cam system 4 on a shaft 42 driven from a motor 35 imparts the rotary motion through a toothed segment 8 and pinion 9, while a cam shaft 16 gives the vertical sliding motion through a shaft 22 and a chain and sprocket wheel connection to the slide 2. Rollers 5, 17 are kept in contact with the cams by compressed air cylinders. A bracket 50, Figs. 1, 2, is rotatable about a post 52, when a locking pin 48 is withdrawn from a recess 49 at predetermined moments in the cycle of operations on the sole, and has attached to it four levers 51, 51<SP>1</SP> pivoted for vertical movement at 53, 53<SP>1</SP>. Supported at one end is a drive transmitting device 54 and tool support 55, and at the other end, and acting also as a counterpoise, a motor 56. To one lever 51<SP>1</SP> a cylinder 60 is attached so that, when pressure is admitted below the piston 61, it is forced against an adjustable screw 62 in an arm 63 of the bracket 50, so that the tool is forced down on the sole edge against the action of a spring 64 attaching the motor end of the levers to the bracket 50.
