The multi-zone heated hair appliance disclosed herein allows for styling of hair utilizing multiple different heating temperature levels without the need for repeated cool down or heat up periods when a different temperature is desired for a particular use during a styling session. More particularly, a heated member of the appliance is provided in which different heated temperature zones are provided. The multiple temperature zones may be simultaneously heated up to different temperatures. Thus, when a user desires a particular temperature for a particular styling technique the desired temperature is readily available by applying the hair to the desired temperature zone. In this manner multiple different styling temperatures are readily available without the need for waiting for the appliance to heat up or cool down.

The arms can have opposing surfaces that can be heated. The heated surfaces can be featureless or include features. One or both surfaces can have rows of closely spaced, parallel blade shaped tines extending across substantially the entire width of the surface from one side of the device to another side of the device. The hair straightening device can have at least two different temperature settings selectable by a user. In certain implementations, one temperature setting may be lower than the other two settings and at a temperature that is not optimal for straightening hair. The other two temperature settings may be set to a temperature that is optimal for straightening hair of different types.

A hair styling iron includes a handle to which a barrel is mounted, a heating element in the barrel, a rotary drive including a motor that rotates the barrel, a control circuit including a timer, and a momentary drive switch which is user actuable and connected to the control circuit for control of the motor. Actuation of the drive switch must be maintained to operate the rotary drive. The control circuit monitors at least one change of state of the drive switch to determine a starting time, and actuates an alarm after an elapsed time measured from the starting time. The elapsed time is calculated by the control circuit in direct proportion to an angle of rotation of the barrel relative to the handle that occurs between a first actuation of the drive switch and release of the drive switch immediately following the first actuation of the drive switch. 1.
