The guide includes a channel through which the fluid flows and an outlet 10 through which it exits. The fluid flows parallel to the endoscope as it travels along the guide until it reaches a chamber (42, fig. 4) where it is made to turn through approximately 110° before leaving the outlet. The guide may include limb guide surfaces 20 positioned at the outlet (see fig. 2) to help the fluid spread out over the end surface. The outlet is curved such that the opening at the centre is smaller than at the sides 12. The resulting convex shape of the outlet ensures that the fluid flows more quickly through the centre than at the sides. The velocity profile created by the outlet aides flow attachment to the limb surfaces and also causes flow divergence.

In one aspect, the present invention is a system for preparing a patient for an endoscopy procedure, such as a colonoscopy. The endoscopic preparation and examination system includes an endoscope, a source of irrigation and aspiration, and a control unit. The endoscope includes an elongated flexible shaft with a distal tip and a proximal end, at least one aspiration lumen and at least one irrigation lumen. A plurality of irrigation ports are functionally connected to the at least one irrigation lumen and a plurality of aspiration ports are functionally connected to the at least one aspiration lumen. A method of segmenting images of biological specimens using adaptive classification to segment a biological specimen into different types of tissue regions. The segmentation is performed by, first, extracting features from the neighborhood of a grid of points (GPs) sampled on the whole-slide (WS) image and classifying them into different tissue types. Secondly, an adaptive classification procedure is performed where some or all of the GPs in a WS image are classified using a pre-built training database, and classification confidence scores for the GPs are generated. The classified GPs with high confidence scores are utilized to generate an adaptive training database, which is then used to re-classify the low confidence GPs. The motivation of the method is that the strong variation of tissue appearance makes the classification problem more challenging, while good classification results are obtained when the training and test data origin from the same slide.

ADAPTIVE CLASSIFICATION FOR WHOLE SLIDE TISSUE SEGMENTATION

A method of segmenting images of biological specimens using adaptive classification to segment a biological specimen into different types of tissue regions. The segmentation is performed by, first, extracting features from the neighborhood of a grid of points (GPs) sampled on the WS image and classifying them into different tissue types. Secondly, an adaptive classification procedure is performed where some or all of the GPs in a WS image are classified using a pre-built training database, and classification confidence scores for the GPs are generated. The classified GPs with high confidence scores are utilized to generate an adaptive training database, which is then used to re-classify the low confidence GPs. The motivation of the method is that the strong variation of tissue appearance makes the classification problem more challenging, while good classification results are obtained when the training and test data origin from the same slide.

In order to prevent floating matters from attaching to a glass plate fixed on a leading end face of an endoscope insertion portion, gas-feed ports are formed around the glass plate. Between the glass plate and the gas-feed ports, a protective barrier is formed in a manner surrounding the glass plate. Ejection of gas through the gas-feed ports generates gas streams to remove unnecessary floating matters existing between the glass plate and an observation target from sight. The gas streams also generate secondary gas streams flowing toward the glass plate. Some of the secondary gas streams are drawn forward with the primary gas streams, while the other of the secondary gas streams collide with the protective barrier. This removes suspended matter, such as oil particles and fat particles, from an imaging visual field. The interval between adjacent air supply ports of the air supply port is specified so that the gas around air currents is caught in the air currents by the air currents without being directed towards the imaging lens. The surrounding gas by the air currents being discharged is pulled in the imaging direction along with the air currents. Since the surrounding gas induced by the air currents is prevented from being induced in the direction of the imaging lens, the imaging lens can be prevented from being contaminated by an unnecessary object.

A method of segmenting images of biological specimens using adaptive classification to segment a biological specimen into different types of tissue regions. The segmentation is performed by, first, extracting features from the neighborhood of a grid of points (GPs) sampled on the whole-slide (WS) image and classifying them into different tissue types. Secondly, an adaptive classification procedure is performed where some or all of the GPs in a WS image are classified using a pre-built training database, and classification confidence scores for the GPs are generated. The classified GPs with high confidence scores are utilized to generate an adaptive training database, which is then used to re-classify the low confidence GPs. An endoscopic probe for use during spinal surgery has an enlarged proximal end for cooperation with the hand of the surgeon and an elongate shaft terminating in a functional distal tip.
