The invention relates to a cardiac lead extraction system, comprising: a handle; an elongated body in communication with said handle; a bendable flexible portion in communication with said elongated body, said bendable flexible portion comprising a first lumen sized and shaped to fit over a cardiac lead; said bendable flexible portion being more flexible than said elongated body; an operational distal end in communication with said bendable flexible portion; where said bendable portion is configured to bend to a bending radius of less than 4 cm while keeping said first lumen open; and where said operational distal end comprises at least one lead extraction assistive tool, said operational distal end comprising a second lumen sized and shaped to fit over a cardiac lead, said second lumen being in communication with said first lumen, and said first lumen comprises an inner diameter of from about 1 mm to about 5 mm. 1. An actuation mechanism for use with a surgical instrument having a housing , a pivotable handle , and a driver , the actuation mechanism comprising:a compliant member including a first arm, a second arm, and a third arm, the first arm including a first pivot point configured to pivotably engage the housing of the surgical instrument, the second arm including a second pivot point configured to pivotably engage the pivotable handle of the surgical instrument, and the third arm including a third pivot point configured to pivotably engage the driver of the surgical instrument,wherein the compliant member is a unitary structure, and is movable between a first position and a second position in response to the pivotable handle moving from a first, unactuated position to a second, actuated position.2. The actuation mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the first arm and the second arm of the compliant member define a first angle therebetween claim 1 , the second arm and the third arm of the compliant member define a second angle therebetween claim 1 , the first arm and the third arm of the compliant member define a third angle therebetween claim 1 , and the third angle is less than 180° when the compliant member is in its second position.3. A steerable catheter. A catheter tube is connected to a catheter handle. A steering wire has a center point affixed to the distal tip of the catheter tube, and each leg of the steering wire is affixed to respective racks inside the catheter handle. The racks are toothed and slidable and are mounted in opposition to each other within the catheter handle. A gear is disposed between the toothed racks and a knob is attached to the gear. Operating the knob rotates the gear and causes the racks to slide in opposite directions thereby pulling one of the steering wire legs to deflect the distal end of the catheter tube.
