ABSTRACT A dental implant system to provide a mechanically self-sufficient artificial tooth possessing a functional pseudo peridontal ligament that does not cause resorption of the supporting bone and ultimate loss is disclosed. The im-plant includes a core component that withstands the masti-catory loadand transmits such load to the root system. The root system comprises an outer component that adheres to the jawbone and possesses a similar modulus of elasticity thus capable of transmitting masticatory stresses along its interface with the bone without excessive stress concentrations and an intermediate component adhering tightly to both the core component and the outer component and having a much lower modulus of elasticity than either the core com-ponent and the outer component. The longitudinal movement of the core component causes the oblique or diagonal stretch-ing of the intermediate component which pulls or applies a force on the outer component which tends to contract it and creates tensile stresses in the portions of the supporting jawbone which interface with the outer component. Such tensile stresses cause bone deposition and stabilize the implant further.

A system of uniquely interchangeable dental implant insert elements which may be readily interchanged by screwing the removable elements into and out of a stationary osseointegrated dental implant housing. The removable insert elements may vary as to their rate and degree of elasticity. The abutment shaft upon which the dental prosthesis is affixed is of standard size throughout the system, and is splined in such a way that the splines can be engaged by a single insertion/removal instrument. The overall design is such that the proper degree of shaft deflection for each case can be readily and painlessly tried in until the desired result is obtained. The inserts are designed to be retrievable at any time allowing for removal and replacement of the existing prosthesis which is affixed to the insert. The insert elements can be continuously interchanged throughout the patient's lifetime to allow for changes in the patient's dental needs. The unique design of these inserts allows the dentist to compensate for slight misalignment problems when trying to obtain multiple coincident paths of insertion by allowing the abutment bearing shaft to be deflected such that the longitudinal axis of the shaft can be made to coincide with the path of insertion of the prosthesis, and thus greatly facilitate the seating and restoration of the prosthesis.

A dental implant includes a porous ceramic cup or ring filled with silicone rubber which supports an artificial tooth or other prosthetic device such as a denture. The jawbone grows into the porous ceramic to hold the implant firmly in place. The silicone rubber cushions the jawbone from shock caused by multidirectional masticatory forces. A fibrous matting is partially embedded into the upper periphery of the silicone rubber that extends from the ceramic cup or ring. Gingival tissue becomes attached to the matting to form a seal that precludes bacteria from invading and infecting the implant area. In another embodiment, the implant includes a metal sleeve completely filled with and surrounded by silicone rubber. Fibrous matting is partially embedded into the surface of the silicone rubber. Both the jawbone and the gingival tissue adhere to the matting to hold the implant firmly in place and to prevent bacterial invasion.

Apart from the base body made from titanium coated with hydroxylapatite, distance socket upper (14) and lower (12) parts are incorporated. - The distance socket upper part (14) has a centring union (24) at its proximal end, with the outer dia. of which the ring recess (18) of the base body corresponds. This union has four equally peripherally spaced tongues (26) which are complementary to the base body pockets (22). The distal part of the inner bore of the distance socket upper part (14) has a greater dia. than the proximal part, whereby in the transition between the two parts or sections a stop shoulder (28) is formed.

A dental implant screw for holding an abutment on a dental implant includes a head and a shaft. A proximal end of the shaft is coupled to the head. The shaft includes a threaded section, an outwardly tapered section leading into a recessed section, and a stop section directly between the outwardly tapered section and the recessed section. The recessed section is directly between the head and the stop section. The threaded section is directly adjacent a distal end of the shaft and is configured to engage threads of an internally threaded bore in the dental implant to hold the abutment on the dental implant.
