Absorbent articles with wicking barrier cuffs

Номер: US6613955B1
Принадлежит: Kimberly Clark Worldwide Inc

An absorbent article is disclosed comprising a thin, flexible wicking barrier with a horizontal portion that is folded back upon itself to create a substantially longitudinal cuff. The wicking barrier can separate a central absorbent member from an outer absorbent member for improved center fill, with the cuff open toward the central absorbent member to intercept liquid flowing toward the longitudinal sides of the article. The wicking barrier cuff desirably contains spacer means to hold the cuff open, providing void space to receive fluid. In one embodiment, lateral compression of the article during use causes the wicking barrier cuff to lift up from the surface of the article, creating a bubble of topsheet material and wicking barrier material (a “dynamic bubble cuff”) that intercepts fluid and improves body fit and leakage prevention.

An absorbent article is disclosed comprising a central absorbent member, an outer absorbent member, and a central rising member for urging the central absorbent member toward the body of the user when compressed laterally inward by the legs of the user. The article is able to achieve good center-fill performance when in use and maintain excellent body fit. Also disclosed is a lateral wicking barrier for inhibition of wicking from the central regions of the article to an outlying outer absorbent member. The combination of a wicking barrier isolating the central absorbent member from the longitudinal sides of the article and a central rising member urging the central absorbent member toward the body yields an article with excellent absorbency and leakage protection.

Macroscopically expanded three-dimensional polymeric web for transmitting both dynamically deposited and statically contacted fluids from one surface to the other

Номер: US4637819A
Принадлежит: Procter and Gamble Co

A macroscopically expanded, three-dimensional fluid-handling polymeric web having first and second surfaces located in substantially parallel planes which are remote from one another. The web includes a multiplicity of fluid-handling capillary networks of macroscopic cross-section for rapidly transmitting fluids which are dynamically deposited on the first surface of said web to the second surface of said web using the dynamic and gravitational head of the fluid as a primary driving force. Each of the macroscopic cross-section capillary networks originates as an aperture in the first surface of the web and has a continuously interconnected sidewall extending in the direction of the second surface of said web. The continuously interconnected sidewall terminates to form at least one aperture in the second surface of said web, whereby the bulk of the dynamically deposited fluid is transmitted from the first surface to the second surface of said web by the macroscopic cross-section capillary networks. The first surface of the web in which the macroscopic cross-section capillary networks originate further includes a multiplicity of fluid-handling capillary networks which are substantially smaller in cross-section than the macroscopic cross-section fluid-handling capillary networks. The smaller fluid-handling capillary networks exhibit a degree of capillary suction sufficient to transmit static fluid contained on the surface of objects which contact the first surface of said web generally in the direction of the second surface of said web by capillary attraction.

The present invention provides a feminine hygiene pad comprising a cover adjacent a capillary fabric having areas of high and low capillary development, the retention layer adjacent thereto. In one preferred sealing embodiment, a creped spunbond layer is used as the cover material and the co-apertured absorption / distribution layer and the transfer delay layer are capillary fabrics. Combining these improvements into an integrated absorption system allows for successful achievement of various flow treatments and achieves a balance between absorption and removal of absorbed fluid from the cover. The result is improved multi-absorbent performance and a comfortable, dry cover surface during use. In a preferred embodiment, the web exhibits a three-dimensional microstructure comprising a regulated continuum of debossed areas of non-uniform cross-section along their length. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the debossed areas comprise capillary networks interconnecting the first and second surfaces of the web, said networks being of decreasing size in the direction of said second surface to promote fluid transport from the first surface of the web to the second surface and inhibit the flow of fluid in the reverse direction. Forming surfaces utilized to produce said webs are constructed by laminating a multiplicity of thin plates having patterns of apertures therein to form an integral structure exhibiting properties and characteristics unachievable by prior art machining and weaving techniques. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the individual lamina from which the laminate forming structure is comprised are produced utilizing photoetching techniques, thus making it feasible to produce nearly any desired level of intricacy in the resultant laminate structure. Preferred means for interconnecting said laminate structures with one another without disrupting the three-dimensional pattern in the area of joinder are also disclosed.

Thus, the invention provides a possibility of penetration of the biological bodily fluids from the first layer acting as a reception layer into the third layer containing SAP particles, wherein the second non-woven layer serves to reduce the volume of liquid per unit surface as a standard dispersion layer. The present invention relates to absorbent cores for use in absorbent articles, preferably of the disposable personal hygiene type. It discloses absorbent cores comprising a foam layer incorporating a nonwoven fabric and having a top surface and a bottom surface, said foam layer top surface comprising one or more indented compressed portions and one or more raised non-compressed portions. The foam layer has openings extending through the foam and the nonwoven fabric. The absorbent core further comprises, joined to the bottom surface of the foam layer, a nonwoven comprising superabsorbent polymers. Absorbent cores of the present invention provide a fast acquisition of body exudates and a good liquid retention capacity. This is further achieved in a simple and cost-effective way without complex and considerable foam formulation and processing requirements.
