A spinal implant is inserted between adjacent vertebrae to function as an disk prosthesis. The prosthesis has two plates fastened to adjacent vertebrae facing each other. The facing sides of the plates each have a depending skirt formed as concentric arcs of about 90 degrees. The skirts are either bowed or tapered in the axial direction. Depressions are centrally located between the arcs of the plates and a ball is universally movable in the depressions. A spring mechanism is centrally located in the plates to provide axial compression. One plate has a through bore and one plate has a receptacle, each, receiving a sleeve with a depression for holding the ball.

A ball and socket joint providing longevity especially suitable for use in implants in human bodies. The ball is designed to incorporate specified strength, hardness, and smoothness characteristics. The socket has a cooperating bearing surface which is less hard than that of the ball. This combination of characteristics lead to maximal mutual bearing contact which minimizes local friction and abrasion. Both components are biologically inert. One component is hydrophilic. The ball is preferably formed from a ceramic, such as a metal or silicon oxide or carbide. The socket preferably has a noble metal alloy liner partially surrounding the ball. The socket further includes an insulator isolating the liner from the socket structural member, should the latter be formed from a different metal. The liner can be formed in complementary segments to avoid fracture or splitting. The liner is either mechanically entrapped by the socket structural member or is adhered thereto. The novel ball and socket joint minimizes wear and chemical, electrochemical, and mechanical deterioration in the environment of the human body.

The plates are then rotated about 90 degrees and the opposed arcs of one plate interlock with the opposed arcs of the other plate to prevent separation in the axial direction.

The movements (i) and (ii) of the cutting tool (6) cause the radius of curvature of the bearing surface to change continuously and monotonically as the angle between the radius and the polar axis of the component changes, so that the shape of the bearing surface deviates from that of a true sphere in such a way that discontinuities in the shape of the bearing surface as a result of individual movements are minimised.

The freeze casting process for preparing a green shaped article such as a biocompatible bioceramic prosthesis or implant, comprises: a) providing a substrate at an initial predetermined spacing from one or more liquid dispensing outlets; b) writing a predetermined amount of a liquid formulation from at least one of the outlets onto the substrate, the formulation comprising: 8 to 99.99% by weight of a liquid sol comprising a liquid carrier and from 5 to 50% by weight, based on the weight of the carrier, of colloidally dispersed nanoparticles having a mean particle size in the range 0.25 to 100 nm; 92 to 0% by weight of a mineral powder having a mean particle size greater than 0.1 micron, and 0.01 to 10% by weight of at least one surfactant, freezing point depressant and/or rheology modifier; c) cooling the liquid formulation on the substrate so as to at least partially freeze the carrier on the cooled substrate; d) increasing the spacing between the one or more dispensing outlets and substrate to a further predetermined spacing; e) writing a further predetermined amount of the liquid formulation from at least one of the outlets either on to the substrate or on to deposit formed in steps b) and c) f) cooling the liquid formulation so as to at least partially freeze the liquid carrier on the substrate and/or on the deposit; and g) optionally repeating steps (d), (e) and (f) one or more times.
