A patient support structure includes a pair of independently height-adjustable supports, each connected to a patient support. Patient is temporarily fixed in position for an operation by laying him on a rectangular mat which is impermeable to air. It is filled with polystyrene pellets (26) of 4-6mm dia. and a bulk density of 80-100 kg/cu.m. between flexible and robust plastic foils (22,24). In the buttocks support of the invention, the arms of the U-shaped yoke are connected to the inboard end of the platform, and a mast fixed to the crosspiece of the yoke is telescopically connected to the outboard end of the platform. This permits the yoke to be lowered to the level of the platform, thus allowing a patient to kneel on or dismount from the platform without first disconnecting the yoke. By making the platform of radiotransparent materials, x-ray beams can pass from a generator positioned beneath the platform, through the front of the patient's body, and to an image tube positioned above the patient's back.

An apparatus for supporting a patient in a prone position during surgery which allows the surgeon to adjust the relative positioning of the patient during surgery. The apparatus generally comprises a patient support structure rotatably mounted on an expandable framework which is connected to an elongate base by a pair of hydraulic lifts. The patient may initially be positioned on the table in a supine position and then rotated so as to be supported in a prone position by the patient support structure with the patient's abdomen pendulous and free. The hydraulic lifts are positioned at the ends of the base and allow one end of the expandable framework and the patient support structure to be raised or lowered with respect to the other end. The patient support structure may be rotated so as to angle the patient's back toward or away from the surgeon. A plurality of pairs of support pads are attached to opposite opposed legs of the patient support structure and are longitudinally adjustable relative thereto. The pairs include a chest support, a hip support and a thigh support pair with each pair being sized and oriented uniquely to provide maximum support for and minimum localized pressure to the skin and to prevent chafing of the associated part of the patients anatomy. The invention concerns a substantially rectangular rigid frame which can be mounted on the yoke with an outboard crossarm of the frame attached to the crosspiece of the yoke and the inboard end of the frame attached to the arms of the yoke. The frame is useful for supporting surgical instruments such as retractors at a surgical wound, in particular a retraction device that a surgeon can adjust with one hand, even without looking. The frame also makes possible a new surgical procedure by which a dislocated vertebra can be moved into position by a lifting mechanism suspended from the frame.

The supports may be independently raised, lowered, rolled or tilted about a longitudinal axis, laterally shifted and angled upwardly or downwardly. Position sensors are provided to sense all of the foregoing movements. The sensors communicate data to a computer for coordinated adjustment and maintenance of the inboard ends of the patient supports in an approximated position during such movements. A longitudinal translator provides for compensation in the length of the structure when the supports are angled upwardly or downwardly. A patient trunk translator provides coordinated translational movement of the patient's upper body along the respective patient support in a caudad or cephalad direction as the patient supports are angled upwardly or downwardly for maintaining proper spinal biomechanics and avoiding undue spinal traction or compression.

A surgical table includes a frame supporting a patient in a prone position through subassemblies including body and leg pads. Relative positions of the pads determine a lumbar sagittal lordosis for the patient, and movements of the frame may disrupt a sterile field during surgery and increase opportunities for infections. By rotatably coupling the leg pad as part of a lordosis adjustment subassembly to the frame, a distal end of the leg pad may pass through an inner space defined by the frame to change the relative position of the pads according to the surgical procedures performed while minimizing frame movement. In this manner, post-operative long-term patient outcomes may be improved by providing optimal degrees of lordosis for the surgical procedures occurring during a surgical visit while minimizing infections.
